Abstract

A reusable porous plastic sterilization pouch may be made from a triple layer laminate having a PTFE core bonded to plastic outer layers. Each layer is breathable with the inner layer acting as a bacteria barrier. The laminate may be folded over items forming a tube like structure where the open ends may be secured by closing clips to form a secure pouch like structure. The layers may be micro porous and the device and contents, which may be hospital operating theatre instruments may be sterilised within an autoclave.

Description

Sterilization Pouch made from Sandwiched PTFE membrane between two plastic Substrates
The pouches are made by bonding a substrate plastic to either side of a PTFE membrane that allows air and steam to pass through however the pores in the PTFE sheet are small enough to restrict the passage of bacteria through and hence is used as a bio barrier to the contents of the pouch. The substrate plastic bonded or welded to each side of the PTFE membrane gives rigidity and strength to the material and resists stretching, ripping and puncturing ensuring that the contents of the pouch remain sterile after being passed through the autoclave. The material is cut and folded over to form a tube and the edge is welded together to provide a tube with the ends open. A basket containing washed and disinfected surgical instruments can then be slid into the tube and the two ends sealed with WeLoc type clips which will then have security clips inserted to ensure they are not opened before use and therefore loose sterility.
As the pouch is made from plastics it can be washed and reused. This will keep the cost of sterilising the surgical instruments lower than present methods of wrapping or containerising the instruments. It will also stop operations being cancelled due to tom paper wraps and eliminate the costs incurred because of having to reschedule the operations. This happens regularly in hospitals using paper wraps.
