Abstract

253,918. Boehringer, A., (trading as Boehringer S÷hn. C. H.). June 20, 1925, [Convention date']. Disinfectants and antiseptics; bacteria, cultivating; medicinal preparations.-Disinfectants, stated to counteract the development. of harmful bacteria such as thrive in alkaline media but not to inhibit the growth of lactic acid bacteria, consist of solutions of lactic acid which have been brought to a hydrogen ion concentration between PH3.2 and PH4.2 with the aid of salts such as lactates. The solutions may be prepared by partial neutralization of lactic acid solution by hydroxides, carbonates, or bicarbonates, of alkali or alkaline earth metals, or by a salt of a weaker acid such as acetic acid, and by diluting or con-. centrating the solution obtained. The solutions may also be prepared by the addition of alkali or alkaline-earth lactates to lactic acid, or by partial decomposition of a salt of lactic acid such as calcium lactate by means of a stronger acid such as sulphuric acid and removal of the salt of the stronger acid so produced. To the resulting solutions may be added bacteriological nutrients such as albumens, peptone, glycoyen, milk sugar, and glucose, odoriferous substances such as oil or neroli and oil of pine, and suspensions of lactic acid bacteria. The preparations may be put up as liquids, or in capsules, or may be dried on an inert powder such as bolus. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) contains also the following matter :-The salt of a weaker acid may be a borate. In order to obtain a solution of stable PH value the lactic acid used may be of a concentration not exceeding 50 per cent, and containing relatively little lactylolactic acid, or solutions prepared from concentrated acid may be heated so as quickly to arrive at a. stable PH value. Other acids, or mixtures thereof, may be used in place of or in addition to lactic acid, for instance tartaric, citric, acetic and its homologues, oxalic, malic, pyroracemic, and amino acids, with or without the addition of inorganic or strong organic acids. Other ingredients which may be added are disinfectants such as silver or mercury salts, fluorides, phenols, cresols, and disinfectant colouring matters. The preparation may be rendered semi-solid by the addition of gelatine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
