Abstract

A nightlatch is provided with an internal spring clip located inside the key cylinder with the spring clip and the key cylinder housing being electrically isolated and forming opposing terminals of a low voltage solenoid 4, such that when a key is inserted it completes the circuit and activates the solenoid causing a bolt 3 to project outwards and engages with the striker plate 5. The bolt engaging with the door frame prevents the door closing until the key is withdrawn which breaks the circuit allowing the bolt to return to neutral (retracted position).

Description

Preventing night-latched door closing before removing key This invention relates to a means of preventing a night-latched door from closing without firstly removing the key.
Homes are often burgled, and cars etc stolen as a result of a keyholder entering a premises, then closing the door without withdrawing the key, thus providing an opportunity for any passing thief.
According to the present invention, there is provided a means of preventing a night-latched door, once opened, from subsequently being closed until the key is withdrawn.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with the aid of the enclosed drawings in which-Drg 1 shows the mechanism required within the lock cavity, and Drg 2 shows the requirements on the inner face of the door.
Description
Drg 1 fig 1 shows a longitudinal section thro a typical cylinder lock with tumblers etc omitted and key withdrawn comprising-cylinder housing 1, cylinder 2, and turning bar 3 which projects thro into the latch casing. Spring clip 4 is secured to, but insulated from the inner end of the cylinder. Latchkey 5 (fig 2) terminates in a plain flat portion 6 which engages with th spring clip when the key inserted to it's operating depth. The spring clip and the housing are wired to the opposing terminals of a low voltage solenoid on the inner face of the door. Inserting the key in the cylinder completes the curcuit via spring clip/key/cylinder and housing, thus activating the solenoid, which remains activated until the key is withdrawn. Fig 3 shows a cross section thro A-A, and 4 details of the spring clip.
13eferring to Drg 2-Fig 1 shows the inner face of entrance door, comprising-door 1 and frame 2. Bolt 3 is housed within solenoid 4. the bolt is projected outwards upon activation of the solenoid as described above. The bolt in fig 1 is shown in the neutral (de-activated) position.
Fig 2 shows a sectional plan view with the solenoid activated and the bolt partly projected, but arrested by making contact with striker plate 5, secured to the frame. Fig 3 shows a further plan view with the door slightly opened, the bolt fully extended beyond the face of the striker plate, preventing the door being closed until the key is withdrawn, allowing the bolt to return to neutral.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1 A system whereby a night-latched door is prevented from closing until the key is removed, comprising-a nightlatch provided with a spring clip, a key, which when engaged with the clip, causes a solenoid-enabled bolt to project beyond the frame rebate, preventing the door, once opened, from closing by a striking plate.
  2. 2 A system as specified in claim 1, combined with a visual or audible alarm unit, activated by the same means as the solenoid.
  3. 3 A system as specified in claim 1, substantially as the enclosed description and drawings.
