Refrigerating, compression machines for cooling liquids, tubular apparatus for.-In a compression refrigerating apparatus for cooling liquids or for precipitating, by crystallization sodium nitrate from a solution of caliche as described in Specification 192,032, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c, Metallic], the liquid to be cooled is circulated through the tubes 14 of the evaporator by a pump 40, and a liquid film of refrigerant is maintained over the outside of the tubes through the annular spaces 17 between the apertures in the refrigerant distributing trays 16 and the tubes. The refrigerant is fed through a pipe 20 to one or more of the upper trays and the unevaporated portion is recirculated over the tubes by a pump 25, while the vapour passes upwardly over the trays to an outlet 23 which is connected to the compressor. The liquid refrigerant entrained by the vapours is separated therefrom by the tubes and collects in the uppermost tray. When used for precipitating salts from solution, the salts are collected in a nopper chamber 30 fitted with a slide 46. In a modification, the tubes are arranged horizontally and the liquid refrigerant is distributed over them by perforated trays.
