Abstract

253,721. Downes, G. H. June 24, 1925. Bricks, special shapes of. - Hollow building blocks of the kind having interengaging projections and recesses and open tops and bottoms are formed in one or more sides with through holes 29 which are open to the interior of the block and are engaged by projections 28 on the sides of adjacent blocks, and a concrete filling is provided when the blocks are assembled. The blocks may have dovetail recesses and projections 29, 28, as in Fig. 4, which extend downwardly for half the depth of a block, and the sides 24, 25 extend downwardly to engage in the open tops of the blocks in the course beneath, or the blocks may, as in Fig. 11, have circular projections and recesses 93, 92, and have the sides 24, 25 provided with arch-shaped openings 94. The blocks may be additionally connected by nuts and bolts. The upper edges of the transverse sides of the blocks may be recessed to receive metal tie-rods. Projecting flanges 26 may be provided on two of the outer edges of the blocks to provide a covering at the joints. The longitudinal sides of the blocks may be extended vertically, as in Fig. 8, to form a channel 40 in which the frame members of the roof may be bedded by means of concrete. The lowest course of blocks is provided with an enclosed bottom 30, Fig. 8, opening 35 being provided in the transverse sides. U-shaped flanges 45, Fig. 8, may be provided on the sides of the blocks for the reception of floor joists, or holes and slots 46, Fig. 2, extending downwardly from the upper edges may be provided for such purpose. At door and window openings blocks of right-angled form 48, Figs. 6 and 7, are provided. Partition walls may be connected to the outer walls by providing in the centre of a longitudinal side of an outer wall block, a dovetail recess adapted to be engaged by a corresponding projection on a partition block, or recesses 55, Fig. 10, provided in the sides 51, 52, of the outer wall blocks may be engaged by projections 54 on the partition blocks 53. The blocks 53 may have projections 56 on their lower faces. Projections 28 and recesses 29 on partition wall blocks are adapted to engage with chimney blocks 14, Fig. 2.
