Abstract

253,597. Marshall, G. Andrew-. March 18, 1925. Filters with loose filtering-materials.-A combined air and water scour for filter beds is produced by a closed tank in which air is compressed by water from a tank at a higher level, compressed air and water being successively supplied from the lower tank. The lower tank a, Fig. 1, is provided with an air inlet valve d and an outlet pipe e delivering into a valved pipe f, the upper portion of which is enclosed by a sleeve. Water enters the tank a through a valved pipe c and compresses the air. On opening the valve f<1> the air is first delivered under pressure and the water afterwards siphons off. Separate valved outlet pipes for air and water may be provided in place of the siphon device. Fig. 3 shows apparatus for supplying a battery of filters h, in which the air outlet pipe e is extended to deliver directly to valves h', to which also the water is supplied.
