Abstract
253,486. Hopkins Corporation, (Assignees of Hopkins, M. C.). June 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Diaphragms; magnetic instruments; loudspeakers.-A loud-speaker has a large conical diaphragm, of stiff paper or the like, mounted under radial tension by a flexible rim which gives freedom for axial movement of the cone. As shown, a flat flexible rim is formed on the diaphragm 4 by cutting radial slots 4<a>, Figs. 11, and 12, in the periphery and bending the tabs so formed into a plane normal to the axis of the cone. This rim is cemented to a ring 8 in such a way that the cone is under radial tension and is free to vibrate substantially as a whole. Triangular portions 4b, Fig. 5, may be removed at the inner ends of the radial slits to increase the flexibility of the rim. The centre of the diaphragm is connected by a rod 19 to a vibratory reed 18 of an electromagnetic device forming the subject-matter of Specifications 253,080 and 253,487. This device is carried centrally by a metal spider 6. The whole apparatus is contained in a flat case comprising a rectangular frame 1 and front and back perforated covers 31, preferably of woven cane.
