Description

1 Packaging for a Gift and Method Thereof 3 The present invention relates to the field of packaging. In particular, novel packaging and 4 methods thereof are described that are ideal for wrapping gifts.
6 Background to the Invention
8 At Christmas and for birthdays it is normal practice to buy gifts for all of their close friends 9 and family. Traditionally these gifts are wrapped in a decorative wrapping in order to hide the contents of the gift until such time that the gift is to be opened by the recipient. A label 11 is usually added to the decorative wrapping in order to allow the recipient to know that the 12 gift is intended for them and to provide information regarding the identity of the person 13 giving the gift.
In recent time there has been an increase in the giving of gifts between groups of friends 16 through a "Secret Santa" scheme. Such schemes involve the members of a group or 17 community being randomly assigned a person to whom they are to anonymously provide a 18 gift i.e. only the recipient's name is put on the gift. The schemes are often practiced in the 19 workplaces or amongst large families with a price limit normally being applied and so offer a way for many people to give and receive a gift at low cost without requiring each 1 member of the group to buy a present for every other member. In this way, "Secret Santa" 2 schemes also encourage gift exchange in groups whose members are not close enough to 3 participate in the more traditional way of giving Christmas presents.
One problem in the above gift giving processes is the requirement to have the gift 6 decoratively wrapped. This requires a significant degree of skill and effort which is often 7 beyond the abilities of the individual giving the gift. It is for this reason that many retail 8 outlets, including online retail outlets, offer a gift wrapping service, often at an additional 9 charge to the person purchasing the gift. This increased cost often results in a lower priced gift being bought so as to enable the person buying the gift to keep within budget.
12 It is an object of an embodiment of the present invention to provide an alternative 13 packaging and method thereof which obviates or mitigates one or more drawbacks or
14 disadvantages of the above described prior art.
16 Summary of the Invention
18 According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided packaging for a gift 19 the packaging comprising: a first wrapping layer arranged to cover the gift and conceal its content from a gift 21 recipient; and 22 a second wrapping layer located over the first wrapping layer, 23 wherein the second wrapping layer comprises information regarding the gift contained 24 therein.
26 Most preferably the second wrapping layer comprises a sleeve that only partially covers 27 first wrapping layer. Alternatively the second wrapping layer completely covers the first 28 wrapping layer.
The information regarding the gift may comprise information selected from a group 31 comprising: a product name; a product description; a strap line personalised for the 32 recipient; and a manufacturer's logo.
34 The first wrapping layer preferably comprises a label. Preferably the label is covered by the second wrapping layer. The label preferably provides a means for the purchaser to 1 identify the recipient of the present. The label may also provide a means for the purchaser 2 to identify themselves to the recipient 4 According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided method of packaging a gift the method comprising: 6 providing a first wrapping layer arranged to cover the gift and conceal its content from a 7 gift recipient; and 8 providing a second wrapping layer located over the first wrapping layer, 9 wherein the second wrapping layer comprises information regarding the gift contained therein.
12 Preferably providing the second wrapping layer comprises providing a second wrapping 13 layer that only partially covers first wrapping layer. Alternatively providing the second 14 wrapping layer comprises providing a second wrapping layer that completely covers the first wrapping layer.
17 The method of packaging the gift may further comprise providing the first wrapping layer 18 with a label. Preferably the label is covered by the second wrapping layer.
Embodiments of the second aspect of the present invention may comprise features to 21 implement the preferred or optional features of the first aspect of the invention or vice 22 versa.
24 According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a gift comprising packaging in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention.
27 Brief Description of the Drawings
29 There will now be described, by way of example only, various embodiments of the invention with reference to the drawings, of which: 32 Figure 1 presents an isomeric view of packaging in a first wrapped state in accordance 33 with an embodiment of the present invention; and 1 Figure 2 presents an isomeric view of the packaging of Figure 1 in a second wrapped 2 state.
4 In the description which follows, like parts are marked throughout the specification and drawings with the same reference numerals. The drawings are not necessarily to scale 6 and the proportions of certain parts have been exaggerated to better illustrate details and 7 features of embodiments of the invention.
9 Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments
11 Packaging 1 for a gift in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention will now 12 be described with reference to Figures 1 and 2. In particular, Figure 1 presents an 13 isometric view of the packaged gift in a first wrapped state, while Figure 2 presents an 14 isomeric view of the packaged gift in a second wrapped state.
16 From Figure 1 it can be seen that the packaging 1 comprises a first wrapping layer 2 the 17 function of which is to provide decoration for the gift contained therein while hiding the 18 nature of the gift until such time that the gift is unwrapped by a recipient. The first 19 wrapping layer 2 preferably comprises a label 3 that is preferably printed directly on the first wrapping layer 2. The label 3 thus provides a means for the purchaser to identify the 21 recipient of the present e.g. by writing the name of the recipient on the label. The label 22 may also provide a means for the purchaser to identify themselves to the recipient e.g. by 23 writing their own name on the label.
In addition to the first wrapping layer 2, the packaging 1 further comprises a second 26 wrapping layer 4 located over the first wrapping layer 2 the function of which is to provide 27 information regarding the gift contained therein to a purchaser without any requirement to 28 remove the first wrapping layer 2. The information may comprise one or more of the 29 following: a product name 5; a product description 6; a strap line 7 personalised for the recipient; and a manufacturer's logo 8.
32 It is preferable for the second wrapping layer 4 to be in the form of a sleeve so that it does 33 not completely cover the first wrapping layer 2. This provides the purchaser with the ability 34 to also choose a preferred form of decoration carried by the first wrapping layer 2. The 1 second wrapping layer 4 preferably forms an interference fit when located over the first 2 wrapping layer 2.
4 It will be appreciated by the skilled reader that the second wrapping layer 4 may alternatively completely cover the first wrapping layer 2.
7 The packaging 1 provides a pre-wrapped gift that is particularly suited for use within a 8 "Secret Santa" scheme. The gift itself may take any suitable form e.g. novelty glasses 9 calendars, cups or other drinking receptacles, puzzles or games, clocks, mirrors etc. The purchaser views a range of gifts in their first wrapped states. By using the information 11 contained on the second wrapping layer 4 the purchaser is able to make an appropriate 12 selection of the gift for the intended recipient and the decoration carried by the first 13 wrapping layer 2.
The purchaser then removes the second wrapping layer 4 so as to transform the 16 packaging 1 into its second wrapped state i.e. one suitable for passing to the recipient.
17 Preferably the details of the label are then completed by the purchaser before the gift is 18 passed to the recipient.
The above described packaging provides alternative means for a purchaser to obtain a 21 decoratively wrapped gift for a recipient that does not require any wrapping skills on their 22 part or the additional wrapping costs normally associated with in-store or on-line retailers.
23 The gift is simply purchased in a first wrapped state that comprises two separate layers of 24 wrapping and then transformed to a second wrapped state by the removal of the outer layer of wrapping.
27 A packaging for a gift and associated method is described. The packaging comprises a 28 first wrapping layer arranged to cover the gift and so conceal its content from a recipient.
29 A second wrapping layer is then located over the first wrapping layer, the second wrapping layer comprising information regarding the gift contained therein. A purchaser is therefore 31 able to view a range of gifts in their first wrapped states. Employing the information 32 contained on the second wrapping layer the purchaser is then able to make an appropriate 33 selection of the gift for the intended recipient and optionally of the decoration carried by the 34 first wrapping layer. The purchaser then removes the second wrapping layer so as to transform the packaging into a second wrapped state i.e. one suitable for passing to the 1 recipient. A gift is therefore provided that does not require wrapping skills on the part of 2 the purchaser.
4 Throughout the specification, unless the context demands otherwise, the terms "comprise" or "include", or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", "includes" or "including" will 6 be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or group of integers, but not the 7 exclusion of any other integer or group of integers.
9 Furthermore, reference to any prior art in the description should not be taken as an indication that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge.
12 The foregoing description of the invention has been presented for purposes of illustration 13 and description and is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise 14 form disclosed. The described embodiments were chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the invention and its practical application to thereby enable others 16 skilled in the art to best utilise the invention in various embodiments and with various 17 modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated. Therefore, further 18 modifications or improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of 19 the invention as defined by the appended claims.
