Abstract

A capacitive touch device is described. The capacitive touch device, such as an x-y touch pad, comprises a plurality of capacitive touch elements, wherein two or more non-adjacent capacitive touch elements are electrically connected. The touch elements may be in the form of rows and columns, where two or more non-adjacent rows are connected and/or two or more non-adjacent columns are connected. The touch device may comprise a controller having a plurality of input ports, wherein each input port may be connected to two or more touch elements. An article may incorporate the capacitive touch system, such as a map or a globe, a pamphlet or leaflet, a postcard or greetings card, or an article of clothing. The aim of the invention is to increase the size of a capacitive touch sensor without increasing the number of input ports on the controller.

Description

Capacitive touch device
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a capacitive touch device and to an article, such as a map or globe, which incorporates a capacitive touch device.
Background
Touch pads tend to be limited in size by number touch constraints, the number of input/output (I/O) ports on a microcontroller and the size of a person's finger.
For example, WO 2013/128209 Al and WO 2013/128208 Al describe touch-sensitive input devices based on x-y touch. In these touch-sensitive input devices, diamonds used for sensing tend to be limited in size to be no bigger than a finger tip. This sets a cell size. Thus, the number of I/O ports on a microcontroller sets the total size of the /5 pad, namely number of I/O ports multiplied by the cell size.
One way to provide a larger x-y touchpad us to use a controller with more I/O ports, to use more controllers or to use multiplexing.
Summary
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a capacitive touch device. The capacitive touch device comprises a plurality of capacitive touch elements. Two or more non-adjacent capacitive touch elements are electrically connected.
Thus it is possible to provide a capacitive touch device covering a larger area.
The capacitive touch device may be an x-y touchpad. The touch elements may include an array of first elements (e.g. rows) spaced apart in a first direction and an array of (c) second elements (e.g. columns) spaced apart in a second, transverse direction.
The capacitive touch device may comprise a substrate. The substrate may comprise a fibre-based material, such as paper or card. The substrate may comprise plastic. The substrate may comprise a laminate.
The capacitive touch elements may comprise electrically-conductive ink, such as a carbon-based ink. The electrically-conductive ink maybe formed by printing.
The capacitive touch elements may comprise metallic foil.
According to a second aspect of the present invention a capacitive touch system comprising the capacitive touch device and a co controller having a plurality of input ports.
According to a third aspect of the present invention an article incorporating a capacitive touch system comprising the capacitive touch device and a co controller having a plurality of input ports.
The article can be a map or globe.
The article may be a printed article. The printed article may be a pamphlet, flyer leaflet or other single sheet article. The printed article may be a promotional item. The printed article may be a map or a cover for a map. The printed article maybe postcard or greetings card. The printed article may be a map or a cover for a map. The printed article may be an insert for another item, such as a magazine, book or other product. The printed article may be an insert in or part of product packaging. The product may -3 -be media (such as a vinyl record or a CD). The product may be an article of clothing, game or food stuff (such as box of cereal). The insert may be free or bound into another item. The printed article may be a game or playing card. -4 -
Brief Description of the Drawings
Certain embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 illustrates a globe; Figure 2 illustrates a map; and Figure 3 illustrates a capacitive touch system which is incorporated into the globe shown in Figure 1 or the map shown in Figure 2.
Detailed Description of Certain Embodiments
Referring to Figure 1, a globe, for example of the world, is shown which incorporates a capacitive touch system. The capacitive touch system can be used to make the globe interactive, for example, by stating the name of a country when it is touched by a user.
Referring to Figure 2, a map, for example of the world shown in Mercator projection, is shown which incorporates a capacitive touch system which operates in the same or similar way to the globe.
Figure 3 illustrates a capacitive touch system which includes a capacitive touch controller, such as microcontroller, a capacitive touch device in the form of an x-y touch pad comprising rows and columns. The row and columns can be formed as a chain or diamond-shaped elements. Suitable touch devices are described in WO 2013/128209 Al and WO 2013/128208 Al which are incorporated herein by reference.
The capacitive touch device may a fibre-based substrate, such as paper or card, and the -0or capacitive touch elements may comprise electrically-conductive ink.
The x-y touch pad can be disposed on the inside of a shell forming the globe. The x-y touch pad can be disposed under the map. The capacitive touch controller includes one or more output devices. An output device may be a sound-emitting device, such as a piezoelectric sounder. An output device may be one or more light-emitting device, such as an LED, or a display. An output device may comprise a wireless network interface, such as Bluetooth (RTM) transceiver.
More than one row and/or more than one column are connected. For example, a first 35 line from the controller is connected to column one and column four, a second line is connected to column two and five and so on. Thus, non-adjacent rows and non- -5 -adjacent columns are not connected. In this way, it is possible to expand the size of the array.
It will be appreciated that many modifications maybe made to the embodiments 5 hereinbefore described. -6 -
