Abstract

A removable clamp 8 that clamps together a pair of cooperating flanges 1, 7 of separate parts of a heat exchanger to prevent leaks; the clamp comprises a circumferential closure system that surrounds the flanges and having a plurality of dovetail grooves 3 that each cooperates with an o-ring 2 and a grooved metal gasket 4 which together prevents leaks from occurring from the heat exchanger. The closure system compensates for movement during operation of the heat exchanger. The clamp may be used in plants including hydrogen plants, chamber industry plants, metal industry plants. The metal gasket may be made from stainless steel or graphite. The clamp may provide quick / rapid opening and closing of the heat exchanger and reduces shut down times and quicker startup times as gaskets and o-rings can be replaced quickly.

Description

I
QUICK OPENING CLOSURE FOR HEAT EXCHANGER WITII SPECIAL
TIGHTENING SYSTEM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
(001) The invention relates to quick opening closures for heat exchangers.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
(002) Heat exchangers are used in many industrial applications, including in hydrogen plants and other chemical plants. For many of these applications, high tightness of connections is demanded, particularly during operation to avoid any leakage. Flange connections must be securely and tightly bolted together but must also be able to withstand movement that occurs during heat exchanger operation without leakage.
(003) In the event of a leak, it is necessary to shut down the heat exchanger and allow the heat exchanger to cool down before opening the connections and making repairs. It is too dangerous in many settings to perform this when the heat exchanger is operating, e.g. performing hot bolt tightening. The required shut down and repair is therefore time consuming and expensive. All of the connections need to have leak tests performed and any necessary repairs must be completed before the heat exchanger may be restarted safely.
(004) It is important that the flanges of the heat exchanger are correctly bolted to avoid as much movement as possible during operation. Even small, uncompensated movement can result in leakage, thereby requiring the shut down and repair operation. Existing closure systems include special bolt tightening practices employing spiral wound gaskets, grooved metal gaskets, ring joint gaskets, 0-ring gaskets and others.
(005) There remains a need in the art for improvements to closures for heat exchangers.
SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
(006) The invention provides a quick opening closure for a heat exchanger having a special tightening system that overcomes many of the problems with existing closure systems.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

(010) Figure 4 is a more detailed view of the quick closure system of the invention.
(011) Figure 5 is another detailed view of the quick closure system of the invention.
(012) Figure 6 is a detailed view of the quick closure system of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
(013) The invention provides a quick opening closure with a special tightening system which helps prevent leakage of flange connections of a heat exchanger. The invention will be more fully described with reference to the drawing figures.
(014) Figure 1 is a schematic view showing the general arrangement of a heat exchanger having a closure system according to the invention. The heat exchanger is a standard TEMA type heat exchanger, having an inlet for the cold main process stream (cold medium liquid or gas), an inlet for the hot main process stream (hot medium vapor/syngas), an outlet for the heated main process stream (heated medium liquid or gas) and an outlet for the cooled main process stream (cooled medium vapor/syngas). Dark arrows represent the flow of gas or liquid medium through the heat exchanger and hatched arrows represent the movement of vapor/syngas through the heat exchanger.
(015) Figure 1 shows the placement of the tightening system according to the invention, having an associated leakage supervision system and a blocking medium system. The area marked Detail 1 includes the closure system of the invention and will be described in more detail with reference to Figures 2 and 3.
(016) Figure 2 is a detailed view of the quick closure system according to the invention showing the following components: -heat exchanger flange 2 -0-ring gaskets 3 -dove tail grooves 4 -grooved metal gasket -supervision system for connecting and tightening ____. - 6 -vent hole! inspection hole 7 -heat exchanger shell and channel 8 -quick opening closure.
(017) The arrangement shown in Figure 2 prevents leakage by the coordination of the dove tail grooves, 0-ring gaskets and grooved metal gasket. The grooved metal gasket is preferable made of stainless steel/graphite 4+2*0.5mm.
(018) The areas marked Detail 2 and 3 of Figure 2 will be described in more detail with reference to Figures 4 and 5 below.
(019) Figure 3 is a side view of the quick opening closure system. of the invention taken along line A of Figure 2. Figure 3 again shows the heat exchanger flange I, supervision system 5 and quick opening closure 8. In addition, Figure 3 shows opening and fixing device 9. The arrows marked "h" in Figure 3 indicate movement of the opening and fixing device 9.
(020) Figure 4 is a more detailed view of:he quick closure system of the invention showing many of the same components as shown in Figure 2. In particular, Figure 4 shows the arrangement of heat exchanger flange 1, o-ring gaskets 2, dove tail grooves 3, grooved metal gasket 4, supervision system 5, vent hole 6 and quick opening closure 8.
(021) Figure 5 provides a detailed view of the quick closure system of the invention showing the same components as found in Figure 4, but having arrows depicting movement during operation of the heat exchanger. In particular, the following are depicted by arrows in Figure 5.
a -inside pressure b -movement caused by inside pressure c -fixing pressure by operation of closure during assembly or startup d -fixing pressure by opening device during operation e -stabile tightening of ring gasket f-flange movement.
(022) The area marked detail 4 in Figure 5 will be described in more detail with reference to Figure 6. Figure 6 is a more detailed view of the quick closure system of the invention having arrows depicting movement during operation of the heat exchanger. In particular, Figure 6 shows greater detail of movement caused by stabile tightening of ring gasket -arrows e, and flange movement -arrows I (023) The invention provides a number of advantages. In particular, the system of the invention can be closed and opened quickly. The system remains tightly sealed despite inner pressure and flange movement during heat exchanger operation. The system of the invention works by combination of a number of different gasket designs. The invention enables quick shut down and startup times, because operation can be stopped quickly and faulty gaskets, e.g. 0-ring gaskets and grooved metal gaskets can be replaced very quickly.
(024) The system of the invention can be used in a variety of plants, including hydrogen plants, chamber industry plants, metal industry plants, etc. The system of the invention can be used in any operation where a heat exchanger is needed and provides the advantages noted above. The system of the invention works equally well for low or high temperature and different pressure applications. In addition other options are possible, such as PLC control of the supervision system and addition of further gaskets.
(025) It is anticipated that other embodiments and variations of the present invention will become readily apparent to the skilled artisan in the light of the foregoing description, and it is intended that such embodiments and variations likewise be included within the scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims.
