Abstract

A portable electronic device includes a single low reflective paper-like display (D). The device has buttons (A) and (B) to navigate through screens on the display. The device has the capability to receive, store and display multiple barcodes, QR Codes or other optical indicia which can be read by barcode readers or the like. The barcodes stored in and displayed on the device may correspond to loyalty scheme barcodes, voucher and coupon barcodes and gifting barcodes. The device may include means (C) for optically imaging or otherwise scanning barcodes. The device may include sound generating means (F) allowing the device to be located by sending a 'find' message which causes the device to emit a tone. The device may include means for displaying an alert message. The device may include an infra red detector (E) for detecting when the device is passed over a barcode scanner.

Description

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] This paper relates generally to portable electronic devices, and more specifically, to portable electronic devices having a single electronic paper like display for displaying barcodes, QR Codes or other optically scannable indicia such as for use in loyalty card display, voucher or coupon display or gift card display
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Modern retail stores and other customer facing programmes like to reward their customers' loyalty with points. To maintain these they use plastic fobs, keyrings or credit card size loyalty cards. The problem is that these wear easily and a customer of multiple loyalty schemes much carry a card or fob for each programme.
Modern phones have antiglare and anti-scratch screens, meaning that a traditional barcode reader is unable to read them.
[0003] Modern retail stores and other customer facing programmes like to provide offers and discounts to their customers, in the form of vouchers or coupons, to entice them to purchase in general or purchase specific goods. To issue these most provide in a paper format or email forthe customer to print, this paper format means the customer must remember to take that paper with them when they go to that specific store. Some can present the coupon to a phone, these modern phones have antiglare and anti-scratch screens, meaning that a traditional barcode reader is unable to read them.
[0004] Modern retail stores and other customer facing programmes like to offerthe opportunity to purchase a gift card. The recipient of this gift card, will receive in the format of a plastic card or printed paper, which will carry a barcode. The customer receiving multiple gift cards would need to carry all with them. These could be presented to a modern phone, these modern phones have antiglare and anti-scratch screens, meaning that a traditional barcode reader is unable to read them.
[0005] There is a need for portable electronic devices, and more specifically, to portable electronic devices having a single electronic paper display for displaying barcodes, QR Codes and other optically scannable indicia such as for use in loyalty schemes, vouchers & coupons and gifting.
[0006] There is a need for portable electronic devices, [0001], to be powered in a baftery free way to support environmentally friendly aspirations and reduce the cost of maintenance.
[0007] There is a need for portable electronic devices, [0001], to be protected by some form of security, if the device is misplaced or stolen.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] In a first aspect, the present invention provides a portable electronic device which includes a housing, a display, two selection buttons, an infrared sensor and a speaker.
[0009] In a second aspect, the present invention can include all the items mentioned in [0008] and also a image capture device (such as a CCD or barcode sensor).
[0010] Either aspect [0008] or [0009] may be connected to a device such as a PC,Tablet or Mobile [0011] Either device [0008] or [0009] can be used to display the user's desired QR Code, Barcode or optically scannable indicia, examples of execution would include but are not limited to loyalty schemes, coupons or vouchers or gifting.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0012] The invention and its abilities will be detailed within the claims section. Further clarity can be brought in reference to the following accompanying drawings: [0013] FIG. 1 is a front side elevation view of one version of the portable electronic advice, displaying as example a barcode. This shows the single paper like electronic display.
[0014] FIG. 2 is a front side elevation view of one version of the portable electronic advice, displaying as example a QR Code. This shows the single paper like electronic display.
[0015] FIG. 3 is a representational view of the exchange of barcodes, QR Codes and other scannable optical indicia between the invention and other devices.
[0016] FIG. 4 is a representation example of one execution of this portable electronic device, a keyring fob.
[0017] FIG. 5 is a representation example of one execution of this portable electronic device, in credit card size.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0018] In the first instance, the present invention provides a new solution, a portable electronic device which has a method for displaying barcodes, QR Codes and other scannable optical indicia. These are displayed on a single electronic paper like display [0019] In the second instance, the present invention in [0018] has also the specific application of storing and displaying multiple barcodes, QR codes or other scannable optical indicia for loyalty schemes, replacing the need for multiple plastic cards or key fobs.
[0020] In the third instance, the present invention in [0018] has also the specific application of storing and displaying multiple barcodes, OR codes or other scannable optical indicia for coupons or vouchers, replacing the need paper versions.
[0021] In the fourth instance, the present invention in [0018] has also the specific application of storing and displaying multiple barcodes, OR codes or other scannable optical indicia forgifting, replacing the need for plastic card or paper versions.
[0022] In the fifth instance, the present invention in [0018] has the ability to receive barcodes, OR codes or other scannable optical indicia via a wired or wireless connection to another device. Devices including but not limited to PC, Tablet or Mobile Phone. This is shown in Fig.3, where the invention is [G], the mode of communication (Wired or Wireless] is [H] and the end device is [I].
[0023] In the sixth instance, the present invention in [001 8], a miniature CCD or barcode scanner may be integrated, this is shown on Figl. as [C]. This allows the user to append new scannable optical indicia into the keyfob, along with an identification text. This would remove the need for pairing with other devices.
[0024] In the seventh instance, the present invention in [0018], expects to syncronise with ifs registered device within a predetermined time frame. A warning is displayed after this period that it will be locked, if locked this can only be unlocked by synching with the registered device or entering a predefined code.
[0025] In the eighth instance, the present invention in [0018], may integrate security capability without the need to synch to another device. This security measure, would cause the portable electronic device to be locked after a predetermined amount of time, this would only be unlocked by entering a predefined code.
[0026] As shown in Fig.1,the user selects the desired barcode or voucher code using buttons [A] and/or [B] to scroll through the list of stored barcodes.
(0027] As well as storing scannable optical indicia an identification text can also be stored: this is used to identify the scannable optical indicia. This ted will be displayed from claim [0023].
[0028] With reference to Fig.1,there is a Infra Red (IR) detector [E], that is used to identify when a barcode has been passed over a barcode reader within a retailer outlet.
[0029] After a pairing between the fob and the host has been established it is possible for the host to request that the fob sounder is activated (for example this can be used to locate los keys): with reference to Fig.1 the sounder is shown in [F].
[0030] In the present invention [0018] every portable electronic device contains a unique serial number that can be logged to the end user. So if a device is lost, a finders message similar to for reward return to...' message can be displayed.
