Abstract

A suture for face-lifts comprises retaining cones having a base with teeth 4 or spines 5. This helps improve clamping of the cones to the facial tissue, and helps increase the amount of collagen which is produce by the stimulation of dissolved polylactic acid of the cones. The suture may further comprise a long needle at each end, or a long needle at one end and a small curved needle at the other.

Description

Intellectual Property Office Application No. GB1516628.3 RTIVI Date:12 November 2015 The following terms are registered trade marks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: Silhouette Silhouette Soft Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.gov.uk/ipo Face lift sutures with bidirectional spiny full cones This invention relates to Silhouette1M face lift sutures which have bidirectional spiny full cones.
Silhouette1M face lift sutures are one type of face lift sutures which are used to lift sagging cheeks, eye brows and neck.
KMI ( US incorporation for the production of medical devices) invented the first silhouette face lift suture ( US patent 7,468,068 and US patent 7,582,105 B2) in the year 2006.
The suture is 40 cm long made of polypropylene 3 -0 size ( non absorbable). There is a 20 cm long needle attached to one end of the suture and a small half circled needle attached to the other end. There are series of cones over the suture which are spaced by suture knots.
Each cone is 2.5 mm long with a small hole at one end ( 0.35 mm outer diameter). The wider opening (the base) of the cone is 1.1 mm in outer diameter.
The cones in these two US patents have thin paper like walls.
They are hollow "shell " conical shaped cones. They are made of bioabsorbable polylactic acid. Polylactic acid dissolves with time to stimulate collagen production.
The shape of these cones, which are mentioned in these two US patents are either ordinary shaped cones or shows frusto-conical embodiment or faceted embodiment.
The color of these cones are usually transparent.
A modified version of this US suture is the Silhouette Soft. This suture is 30 cm long, 3-0 size, made of bioabsorbable polylactic acid. There is a 12 cm long 23 G size needle on both ends of the suture. The suture contains two groups of bidirectional cones, of the same cones which are mentioned before. Silhouette Soft suture was developed in the year 2012.
Later on UK patent number GB 2492900 ( Modified Silhouette face lift surgical suture) talked about a new mean for subcutaneous insertion of the same face lift suture (polypropylene) of the US patents using a long hooked rod.
No changes was mentioned on the nature or the shape or the size of the cones in this patent.
UK patent number GB 2495653 (Super Silhouette face lift suture) was talking about a new mean of inserting the same suture using a hollow tube with a cleft at one end of the it and a small slit on its other end. No changes was mentioned on the nature or the shape or the size of the cones in this patent.
UK patent number GB 2506549 ( Reinforcing mean for silhouette face lift sutures) talked about a reinforcing mean (segment). This segment is placed in between the cones to increase hanging of the cones to the tissues. Unfortunately these segment should be flexible and made of pure polylactic acid. pure polylactic acid when is melt and then solidified it becomes hard, non flexible. Therefore the reinforcing segments were not practical. No changes was mentioned on the nature or the shape or the size of the cones in this patent.
In general the cones are poorly attached to the tissues under the skin. The cone may slip out of the skin on moderate traction during insertion. In addition, these cones, as we said before, are hollow and thin walled cones. This means that the stimulation of collagen production by the dissolved polylactic acid is limited.
To overcome this problem, the present invention proposes "full' cones. The base of these cones are either plane, toothed or spiny, to increase hanging of the cones to the tissues. In the last type, at least one spine is available.
The length of the spine is between 0.3mm to 0.6mm while the width of the base of the spine is 0.3 to 0.4. These spines help in fixing the cones into the tissues during traction of the lifting suture.
Each cone is 2.5 mm long with a small hole at one end (0.35 mm outer diameter). The wider opening (the base) of the cone is 1.1 mm in outer diameter.
The second model proposes a full cone which has toothed base.
The third type of cones is full plane cones.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1. shows a full cone with plane base and a central hole, Figure 2 shows a full cone with a toothed base, Figure 3 shows a full cone with spiny base.

Figure 2 shows a toothed base 4.
Figure 3 shows a spiny base 5 Figure 4 shows an ordinary cone of the original US invention having a fine hole 6 and an empty base 7 Figure 5 shows a faceted empty cone 8 of the original US invention.
Figure 6 shows the face lift suture of the original US invention with a polypropylene thread 9, a 20 cm long needle 10, a small curved half circled needle 11, a cone sample 12 and a suture knot sample 13.
Figure 7 shows the modified US suture, Silhouette Soft, having an absorbable thread 14, a 12 cm long needle 15 which is found on both ends of the suture, a shell cone sample 16 and a suture knot sample 17.
Figure 8 shows the UK invention Modified Silhouette face lift surgical suture having a 20 cm long metallic road 18 with a cleft 19 at the tip and a slit 20 at its upper end, a polypropylene thread 21, a small curved needle 22, a shell cone sample 23 and a suture knot sample 24.
Figure 9 shows the UK invention Super Silhouette face lift surgical suture having a hollow fine 20 cm long mettalic tube 25, a slit 26 at one end, a slit 27 at the other end, a polypropylene suture 28, a small curved needle 29, a shell cone sample 30 and a suture knot sample 31.
