Abstract

Cutting-edges, treating; disc and wheel apparatus; processes, special; wheels and other tools.- -Knife blades and other articles are ground by traversing them, while submerged in an abradent carrying liquid, across a rotating soft non-abrasive member. For knife blades the polishing may be done in three stages, the rotating member being driven at a lower speed during the second stage. and a felt' rubber and a finer abradent being used for the final operation. A bath 14 containing water carrying a relatively small amount of flotative abradent, e.g. about 20 per cent, is mounted on a carriage 10 reciprocated on rollers 9 through crank mechanism 41, 40, 39. The blade Kb is secured inside the bath by a magnetic chuck 16 carried by a ledge 15. The power shaft 39 through gearing 37, 35, 34, 30, 29 drives a pulley 28 splined to a shaft 19 urged downwards by an adjustable spring 23 and thrust washer 25. To the lower end of the shaft is secured an annular member of birch wood or other substance. In order to suspend the polishing while the direction of motion of the blade is changing a cam 42 on the carriage actuates a bell-crank 43, 44 to relieve the pressure of the spring 23. When a mirror finish is desired 4F emery is used for the first two stages and "Chromotron" for the third stage.
