Distances, determining. - A wireless transmitting apparatus is adapted to be thrown from an aircraft and to be set in action on reaching ground or water, the time elapsing between the moment the apparatus is dropped and the reception of the signal being noted by the airman and used bv him to calculate the 'height of the aircraft from known data as to - the speed at which the apparatus falls. The apparatus shown comprises a buzzer 17, Fig. 5, connected to a spark-transmitter 31, and supplied with current from a battery 21 through a switch 25. These devices are contained in a casing 10, Fig. 6, connected to a parachute 11 by a line 13 acting as antenna, and a plummet 14 is hung from an insulator 15 attached to the switch 25, which is thereby kept open until the plummet touches the ground or water, when the plummet line slackens and a spring 26 closes the switch. The parachute 11 and the line 13 are normally wound round a reel 52, and the plummet line round a reel 50. These reels are dropped with the casing 10; the lines and the parachute unroll and extend during the first part of the fall.
