Abstract

A vertical column 3 may have a sliding bracket assembly 1 located thereon using a slot 2. A tilting bracket assembly 4 may be located on the sliding bracket via a horizontal axle 5. A swivelling assembly 6 may be rotationally located to the tilting bracket via a linking pin 7 and associated bearings. The sliding bracket may move up and down the column. Figure 2 shows the whole assembly low on the column with the tilting bracket assembly and swivelling assembly level. To pivot the tilting bracket upward and hence pivot the swivelling assembly upward a knob [Fig 5, 14] located on the tilting bracket is pulled outwards thereby aligning wheel [Fig 5, 11] with runner (or angled ramp) 10. The device may act to provide support to a user who has limited strength in the arms and is intended to allow the user to bring their hands to their face.

Description

SLIDING AND TILTING BRACKET
The present invention relates to a sliding and tilting bracket. More particularly, the sliding and tilting bracket assembly that holds one end of a linked arm assembly that supports the arm of a person with muscle weakness.
People with weak arms for instance as a result of a muscle wasting disease often use mobile arm supports to assist them to use their arms. A mobile arm support may consist of a sling in which the user rests their arm attached to a linked arm assembly with a number of low friction joints. Vertical axis joints allow free movement in a horizontal plane. A non-vertical joint may also allow the user some lifting of their hand perhaps balanced by the weight of their elbow dropping down or by a spring to counter balance the weight of their arm. Some mobile arm supports have a bracket assembly that is powered to slide up and down vertically and holds one end of the linked arm assembly thus lifting and lowering the user's arm.
Typically, users of mobile arm supports with powered vertical movement who have become very weak or who have quite large upper arms or have contractures in their joints causing tightness often struggle to bring their hands in close to their heads when their arm is lifted by the powered mobile arm support. This makes it hard for them to feed themselves, use a telephone, scratch their face or perform other such functions.
The invention described herein provides a means for automatically tilting a bracket assembly as a sliding bracket assembly that it is attached to moves up and down. A typical application is a device to enable people with very weak arms to bring their hands close to their heads so that they can feed themselves, touch their face or perform other functions. The invention provides the following features: * A fixed runner.
* A sliding bracket assembly.
* A tilting bracket assembly rotatably mounted to the sliding bracket assembly through a substantially horizontal axis.
* A rolling wheel rotatably mounted to the tilting bracket assembly.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying Figures, in which: Figure 1 -General view from the rear left hand side of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly low down and the tilting bracket assembly level.
Figure 2 -General view from the front right hand side of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly low down and the tilting bracket assembly level.
Figure 3 -General view from the front right hand side of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly mid way up and the tilting bracket assembly partially rotated upwards.
Figure 4 -General view from the front right hand side of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly high up and the tilting bracket assembly rotated upwards.
Figure 5 -Plan view of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the tilting bracket rotated upwards.
Figure 6 -Plan view of a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the tilting mechanism disengaged.
Figure 1 shows a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly low down and the tilting bracket assembly level. A sliding bracket assembly us slidably mounted in a slot 2 in a vertical column 3. A tilting bracket assembly 4 is rotatably mounted to the sliding bracket assembly 1 by means of a horizontal axle 5 and bearings. A swivelling assembly 6 is swivelably mounted to the tilting bracket assembly 4 by means of a linking pin 7 and bearings. The sliding bracket 1 is low down and the tilting bracket 4 is level with the linking pin 7 vertical.
Figure 2 shows a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly low down and the tilting bracket assembly level. The tilting bracket assembly 4 is free to rotate upwards until it hits an up-stop screw 8 that is screwed into the sliding bracket assembly 1 above the level of the horizontal axle. Such a rotation could arise if the swivelling assembly 6 were lifted or if it were prevented from travelling down as the sliding bracket assembly 1 travels down. The tilting bracket assembly 4 is prevented from rotating to an angle below level by a down-stop screw 9 that is screwed into the sliding bracket assembly 1 below the level of the horizontal axle. A runner lois fixed to the vertical column 3. A rolling wheel 11 is rotatably mounted to a horizontal shaft 12 which is slidably mounted to the tilting bracket assembly 4. The rolling wheel 11 never touches the vertical column 3 and does not touch the runner 10 when the sliding bracket assembly 1 is low down.
Figure 3 shows a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly mid way up and the tilting bracket assembly partially rotated upwards. The rolling wheel 11 is now riding on the tapered part of the runner 10 so that the tilting bracket assembly 4 is rotated at a slight angle around the horizontal axle. Thus the linking pin 7 is no longer vertical and the liked arm assembly 6 will have a tendency to swivel under the action of gravity.
Figure 4 shows a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly high up and the tilting bracket assembly rotated upwards. The rolling wheel 11 is now riding on the main pad of the runner lOso that the tilting bracket assembly 4 is now rotated at a significant angle around the horizontal axle. The linking pin 7 is at a significant angle to the vertical and the swivelling assembly 6 will swivel under the action of gravity.
Figure 5 shows from above a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the sliding bracket assembly high up and the tilting bracket assembly rotated upwards. The arrow 13 indicates the forward direction in this application. A knob 14 fixed to the end of the horizontal shaft 12 is pulled out engaging the tilting mechanism. The rolling wheel 11 is engaged with the runner attached to the vertical column 3 so that the tilting bracket assembly 4 is rotated a significant angle upwards around the horizontal axleS and the linking pin 7 is thus rotated a significant angle backwards and to the right. Only the first part of the swivelling assembly 6 is shown; the centre of gravity of the complete the swivelling assembly 6 is in front of and to the right of a line 15 intersecting the axis of linking pin 7 and perpendicular to the horizontal axle 5; thus gravity will act to move the swivelling assembly 6 back and to the right. Neither the up-stop screw 8 nor the down-stop screw 9 are touching the tilting bracket assembly 4. Holes 16 in the tilting bracket assembly allow adjustment of these screws.
Figure 6 shows from above a sliding and tilting bracket assembly with the tilting mechanism disengaged. The knob 14 fixed to the end of the horizontal shaft 12 is pushed in disengaging the tilting mechanism. The rolling wheel 11 does not engage with the runner 10 as the sliding bracket assembly 1 moves up and down. The tilting bracket assembly 4 remains level resting on the down-stop screw 9 with the axis of the linking pin 7 staying vertical so gravity does not act to swivel the swivelling assembly 6.
In the embodiment shown the horizontal axle 5 is angled at 45 degrees to the forwards direction and is on the left hand side. The invention applies equally to any angle on either side.
In the embodiment shown only one sliding and tilting bracket assembly and one runner 10 are fitted. The invention applies equally to arrangements with additional sliding and tilting bracket assemblies and runners with the runners fitted at the same or different heights. The invention applies equally to arrangements with an additional sliding assembly or assemblies fitted that do not have the tilting mechanism.
In the embodiment shown the tilting action occurs when the sliding bracket assembly moves towards the top of the vertical column because of the position of the runner 10. The invention applies equally to other configurations with the tilting action activated at one or more other vertical positions of the sliding bracket assembly in the vertical column.
In further embodiments of the invention the angle of tilt can be adjusted using means to adjust the position of the horizontal axle 5, the position of the horizontal shaft 12, the diameter of the rolling wheel 11, the thickness of the runner 10, the slope of the sloping part or parts of the runner 10 or any combination of these.
In a specific embodiment of the invention, the swivelling assembly 6 is the linked arm of a mobile arm support used by a person with weak arms so that when the sliding bracket assembly 1 lifts up, the tilting bracket assembly 4 rotates so that the linking pin 7 is no longer vertical and the liked arm assembly 6 will swivel under the action of gravity bringing the person's hand back and in close to their face.
The invention applies equally to other applications and uses.
The invention applies equally where the linking pin 7 is used to swivelably mount other components or assemblies.
In the embodiment shown the linking pin 7 is easily removable in order to allow easy attachment and detachment of the swivelling assembly 6. The invention applies equally to other arrangements.
In the embodiment shown the up-stop screw 8 is adjusted so as to allow at least the amount of rotation of the tilting bracket assembly 4 that the tilting mechanism requires. In the specific embodiment of the invention wherein the swivelling assembly 6 is the linked arm of a mobile arm support with the vertical column 3 attached to a wheelchair, when the sliding bracket assembly 1 is lowered so that the other end of linked arm assembly is brought to rest on the armrest of the wheelchair, then this will rotate the tilting bracket assembly 4 upwards until it hits the up-stop screw 8.
In the embodiment shown the mechanism is set so that when the rolling wheel 11 is not engaged with the runner 10, the tilting bracket assembly 4 is level and the linking pin 7 vertical so that the swivelling assembly 6 has no tendency to rotate inwards or outwards, forwards or backwards. The invention applies equally to cases where the mechanism is set to rest with the tilting bracket assembly 4 rotated upwards or downwards from level when the rolling wheel 11 is not riding on the runner 10 biasing movement of the swivelling assembly 6.
The invention applies equally if other means are used to limit upward rotation of the tilting bracket assembly 4 or if no means are used and rotation is only limited by the fixed shapes of the tilting bracket assembly 4 and the sliding bracket assembly 1. Similarly, the invention applies equally if other means are used to limit downward rotation of the tilting bracket assembly 4 or if no means are used and rotation is only limited by the fixed shapes of the tilting bracket assembly 4 and the sliding bracket assembly 1.
In a specific embodiment of the invention the horizontal shaft 12 is kept in either of its two positions engaged or disengaged by means of a spring clip or clips inside the tilting bracket assembly 4 engaging with slots in the horizontal shaft 12.
The invention applies equally to embodiments where the tilting mechanism cannot be disengaged or where the tilting mechanism is disengaged by other means than described herein.
