Abstract
A high pressure, non-pneumatic heat sealer that comprises of an electric motor, combined with a gear box and geared rack or worm drive to produce a linear drive unit 1 to create a strong linear motion. The device will preferably have a combination of compression springs 2 and flexible pack support 6, with an accurate reactive control mechanism switch 3 which provides continuous high pressure between the hot sealing plate 5 and the pack being sealed 7. The process control is provided by the timer and heater control unit 4. The innovation can thus heat seal packaging requiring a high pressure, controlled temperature and time duration, without the use of compressed air.

Background
This invention relates to high pressure heat sealing.
To seal certain packaging products a controlled sealing process requiring regulated high pressure, high temperature and a timed sealing duration is required. Normally, compressed air is required to provide the high pressure component, but this may not be suitable in the environment the process is required. Therefore, a high pressure non-pneumatic option is required.
Statement of Invention
To overcome this, the present invention proposes the use of an electric motor, combined with a geared linear drive unit, a combination of compression springs and flexible pack support with a reactive control mechanism, to provide continuous high pressure between the sealing plate and the pack being sealed.
Advantages High pressure sealing is now available in a simple, compact, reliable and non-pneumatic machine.
A simple and cost effective self-contained machine requiring a standard electrical supply can perform sealing where an air supply/air usage is not available or appropriate, eg laboratories, airports, and retail areas.

Description
A process timer is actuated to start the process.
The motor drives the motor gearbox linear drive down for a period of motion and sealing time.
The position sensor stops the motor motion as the heater plate enters the compression zone of the packaging support and is also in the extension zone of the over-run springs.
The timer runs down to the end of the sealing time. As the tooling plate moves away from the plate due to backlash in the linear drive, the pressure reduces and the positing sensor allows a restarts of the motor. This maintains the pressure between the top tool plate and the packaging support.
This action may occur repeatedly. The differential of the position switch being on and off is very small so the pressure is controlled between narrow limits.
The sealed packaging is removed and replaced with unsealed packaging. The process is repeated.
Claims (5)
- Claims 1. An innovation using a linear drive system to provide pressure at a controlled level for a specific time to initiate a sealing action between packaging materials and a sealing tool. A sealing film may be used between the base packaging and the tooling. A dual sprung action is translated via a linear drive motion into a controlled pressure, time and temperature sealing action.
- 2. The springs which maintain the pressure may be of metal,rubber or plastic construction.
- 3. The motor and gearbox may be of any construction that provides a linear motion action.
- 4. The sensor is a close tolerance on off switch or micro-switch.
- 5. The timer control is fixed or adjustable for duration.4. The spring actions may be adjustable or fixed.
