Abstract
A vehicle 10 (e.g. electric vehicle, hybrid vehicle, EV, HEV, PHEV) comprises: at least one electric motor 12, configured to drive the vehicle 10; at least one battery 24 that stores electrical energy and supplies the electric motor 12 with the stored electrical energy; an on-board charger 26 that charges the battery 24 using energy supplied by an external power supply 28; and an AC-AC converter 30 that connects the on-board charger 26 to the external power supply 28, wherein the AC-AC converter 30 converts an output voltage provided by the external power supply 28 to an input voltage of the on-board charger 26. The vehicle may include at least one plug 32 for connecting the AC-AC converter 30 to the external power supply 28. The AC-AC converter 30 can decrease the output voltage of the external power supply 28 to match the input voltage of the battery 24. The AC-AC converter 30 also helps supply power for pre-conditioning the on-board charger 26 and/or the battery 24 during charging so that the battery 24 can be charged particularly efficiently.
Description
Vehicle, in particular Passenger Vehicle The invention relates to a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle, according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
Such a vehicle is well-known from the general prior art. For example, the vehicle is configured as a motor vehicle in the form of a passenger vehicle. The vehicle comprises at least one electric motor configured to drive the vehicle. Moreover, the vehicle comprises at least one battery configured to store electric energy and supply the electric motor with the stored electric energy. Thus, the vehicle is configured as an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle, for example. In order to drive the vehicle electrically by means of the electric motor the electric motor is supplied with electric energy provided by the battery.
Hence, the battery is discharged.
Usually, the vehicle comprises at least generator configured to charge the battery. For example, the electric motor and the generator are formed by the same electric machine which can be operated as the electric motor in a motor operation mode and as the generator in a generator operation mode. For example, the generator can be driven by kinetic energy of the vehicle when the vehicle is moving. Thus, at least a portion of the kinetic energy driving the generator can be converted into electric energy by means of the generator, wherein the electric energy can be stored in the battery thereby charging the battery. However, it has been shown that it can be cumbersome to charge the battery when the vehicle is not moving, in particular when the vehicle is parked.
US 5 656 916 shows an apparatus for controlling the charging of a battery of an electric vehicle with a charger which is energizable by an external power supply.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a vehicle of the previously mentioned kind, wherein the battery of the vehicle can be charged particularly efficiently when the vehicle is parked.
This object is solved by the vehicle having the feature of patent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
In order to provide a vehicle of the kind indicated in the preamble of patent claim 1, wherein the battery of the vehicle can be charged particularly efficiently when the vehicle is parked according to the present invention the vehicle comprises an on-board charger configured to charge the battery and to be connected to an external power supply providing electric energy. Moreover, the vehicle according to the present invention comprises an AC-AC converter via which the on-board charger is connectable to the external power supply, the AC-AC converter being configured to convert an output voltage provided by the external power supply to an input voltage of the on-board charger.
Thereby, the battery can be charged by means of the on-board charger and the AC-AC converter of the vehicle itself so that charging time and charging power losses during charging can be kept particularly low. For example, the AC-AC converter helps supply power for pre-conditioning during charging the battery. In other words, a voltage provided by the AC-AC converter can be used to pre-condition, for example, the battery so that the battery can be charged particularly efficiently.
Preferably, the vehicle is configured as an electric vehicle (EV) or a hybrid vehicle which is also referred to as a hybrid electric vehicle that can be configured as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), for example.
Preferably, the AC-AC converter is an integral part of the on-board charger so that the battery can be charged particularly efficiently.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawing. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figure and/or shown in the figure alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawing shows in the only Fig. A vehicle comprising at least one electric motor, at least one battery, an on-board charger and an AC-AC converter which is a part of the on-board charger.
The only Fig. shows a schematic view of a vehicle 10 which is, for example, a passenger vehicle. The vehicle 10 comprises at least one electric motor 12 configured to drive the vehicle. The electric motor 12 has a rotor which is connected to a shaft 14 in a rotationally fixed manner so that the shaft 14 can be driven by the rotor and, thus, by the electric motor 12. The shaft 14 is connected to further shafts 16 via a differential gear 18 of a rear axle 20 of the vehicle 10. The rear axle 20 comprises rear wheels 22 which can be driven by the shafts 16 and, thus, by the electric motor 12. Thus, the vehicle 10 can be electrically driven by the electric motor 12.
Preferably, the electric motor 12 is an electric machine which can be operated in a motor operation mode and a generator operation mode. In the motor operation mode the electric machine acts as the electric motor 12, wherein the electric motor 12 converts electric energy into mechanical energy thereby driving the shafts 14 and 16 and, thus, the wheels 22.
In the generator operation mode the electric machine acts as a generator by means of which mechanical energy is converted into electric energy. The mechanical energy is provided by the shaft 14 so that the generator can be driven by the mechanical energy from which at least a portion is converted into electric energy by means of the generator.
The vehicle 10 further comprises a battery 24 which is electrically connected to the electric motor 12. The battery 24 is configured to store electric energy and supply the electric motor 12 with the stored electric energy. For example, in the motor generation mode the electric motor 12 is supplied with electric energy by the battery 24 so that the electric motor 12 can convert at least a portion of the provided electric energy into mechanical energy thereby driving the shaft 14. Moreover, for example, in the generator operation mode the electric energy provided by the generator can be stored in the battery 24 thereby charging the battery 24. Thereby, kinetic energy of the vehicle 10 can be used to drive the generator so that at least a portion of the kinetic energy can be converted into electric energy and stored in the battery 24 when the vehicle 10 is moving.
In order to charge the battery 24 particularly efficiently when the vehicle 10 is parked, the vehicle 10 comprises an on-board charger 26 which is an integral part of the vehicle 10.
The on-board charger 26 is electrically connected to a battery 24 and configured to charge the battery 24. Moreover, the on-board charger 26 is configured to be connected to an external power supply 28 which is, for example, a national grid. The on-board charger 26 comprises an AC-AC converter 30 which is an integral part of the on-board charger 26. The on-board charger 26 is connectable to the external power supply 28 via the AC-AC converter which is configured to convert an output voltage provided by the external power supply 28 to an input voltage of the on-board charger 26 and, thus, the battery 24. For example, the output voltage of the external power supply 28 is higher than the input voltage of the battery 24. Thus, the AC-AC converter 30 can decrease the output voltage of the power supply 28 to match the input voltage. Moreover, the AC-AC converter 30 helps supply power for pre-conditioning the on-board charger 26 and/or the battery 24 during charging.
As can be seen from the Fig. the on-board charger 26 comprises at least one plug 32 for connecting the AC-AC converter 30 and, thus, the on-board charger 26 to the external power supply 28. Thus, the on-board charger 26 and, thus, the AC-AC converter 30 can be supplied with electric energy provided by the external power supply 28.
