Referring to the drawings, a cable housing connector 10 comprises a tubular body 12 having a first end portion in the form of a first cable receiving portion 14 defining a first main conduit 16. The tubular body 12 also has a second end portion in the form of a second cable receiving portion 18 defining a second main conduit 20.
The body 12 further includes a separating member 22 between the first and second main conduits 16, 20. The separating member 22 defines a communication conduit 24 to provide communication between the first and second main conduits 16, 20.
The body has a first end 14A and a second opposite end 18A. The first cable receiving portion 14 extends from the separating member 22 to the first end 14A, and the second cable receiving portion 18 extends from the separating member 22 to the second end 18A.
The cable housing connector 10 further includes a first 0' ring 26 mounted in the first main conduit 16 and a second 0' ring 28 mounted in the second main conduit 20.
Referring to Figure 2, an elongate tubular first cable housing 30 is received in the first main conduit 16, and an elongate tubular second cable housing 32 is received in the second main conduit 20. The first 0' ring 26 provides a seal between the body 12 and the first cable housing 30, and the second 0' ring 28 provides a seal between the body 12 and the second cable housing 32.
In order to locate the first and second cable housings 30, 32 in the respective first and second main conduit 16, 20, first and second locating arrangements 34, 38 are provided. The first main conduit 16 comprises a first holding portion 40 extending from the separating member 22 to a region approximately half way between the separating member 22 and the first end 14A. The first holding portion 40 defines a first bore 41 in which the first cable housing 30 is held. The first main conduit 16 further includes a first locating portion 42 between the first holding portion 40 and the first end 14A.
The first locating arrangement 34 and the first 0' ring 26 are disposed within the first locating portion 42. A radially outwardly extending first shoulder portion 44 extends from the first holding portion 40 to the first locating portion 42.
The second main conduit 20 comprises a second holding portion 46 extending from the separating member 22 to a region approximately half way between the separating member 22 and the second end 18A. The second holding portion 46 defines a second bore 47 in which the second cable housing 32 is held. The second main conduit 20 further includes a second locating portion 48 between the second holding portion 46 and the first end 1 8A.
A radially outwardly extending second shoulder portion 50 extends between the second holding portion 46 and the second locating portion 48. The second locating arrangement 38 and the second 0' ring 28 are disposed within the second locating portion 48.
Each of the first and second main conduits 16, 20 further include centring means for holding the first and second cable housings 30, 32 substantially centrally within the first and second main conduits. The centring means may comprise a plurality of substantially evenly spaced elongate gripping formations 49, which are provided on each of the first and second holding portions 40, 46, and extend the length of the first and second bores 41, 47. The gripping formations 49 are spaced circumferentially around the first and second bores 41, 47.
The gripping formations 49 are in the form of splines, which project into the first and second bores 41, 47 to engage the first or second cable housing 30, 32 received by the respective first and second holding portions 40, 46. The engagement of the cable housings 30, 32 by the formations 49 holds the first and second cable housings 30, 32 substantially centrally within the respective first and second bores 41, 47.
Each of the first and second locating arrangements 34, 38 comprises a load spreading member in the form of a washer 52 and further comprises a collet 54.
Each of the collets 54 is resiliently deformable to clamp the respective first or second cable housings 30, 32. Each collet 54 comprises a plurality of radially outwardly extending projection 56 which can be received within apertures 59 defined in the body 12. Each projection 56 has a sloping surface 58 which slopes towards the first or second respective end 1 4A, 1 BA of the body 12.
When the first and second cable housings 30, 32 are received within the first and second main conduits 16, 20, the first and second cable housings 30, 32 are held by the collets 54. In the event that an attempt is made to withdraw the first or second cable housings 30, 32 from the respective first or second main conduits 16, 20, the collet 54 is moved so that the sloping surface 58 engages the edge of the respective aperture 59 pushing the projection 56 radially inwardly of the body 23, thereby urging the collet 54 into tighter clamping engagement with the first or second cable housings 30, 32.
Referring to Figure 3, there is shown a close up of the central region of the body 12, as shown in Figure 2. As can be seen, the first cable housing 30 has a first internal diameter Al, and the second cable housing 32 has a second internal diameter A2.
In the embodiment shown, the first internal diameter Al is substantially equal to the second internal diameter A2.
The communication conduit 24 has a first opening 62 at the first main conduit 16, and a second opening 64 at the second main conduit 20. The first opening 60 has a diameter Bi which is greater than the internal diameter Al of the first cable housing 30. The second opening 64 has a diameter B2 which is less than the internal diameter A2 of the second cable housing 32. The communication conduit 24 thus tapers inwardly from the first opening 62 to the second opening 64.
In use, it is necessary to arrange fibre optic cables (not shown) in the first and second cable housings 30, 32 so that the fibre optic cables extend through the first cable housing 30, through the connecting conduit 24 in the cable housing connector and through the second cable housing 32.
The fibre optic cable is arranged within the first and second cable housings 30, 32 after the first and second cable housings 30, 32 have been connected to each other by the cable housing connector 10, and installed, for example, in the ground. Using a technique that would be understood by the person skilled in the art, the fibre optic cables are blown down the cable housings 30, 32 in one direction, which in the embodiment shown in the drawings is in the direction indicated by the arrow X in Figure 3.
When the end of the fibre optic cable reaches the connector 10, it passes from the first cable housing 30 into the communication conduit 24 and will be deflected by the tapering wall 24A of the communication conduit 24 into the second cable housing 32.
As can be seen from Figure 3, the end of the tube wall of the first cable housing overlaps the inner surface 24A at the first opening 62. Thus, when the end of the fibre optic cable reaches the separating portion 22, the fibre optic cable is not obstructed by the separating portion 22 but passes into it. Similarly, since the diameter of the second opening 64 is less than the internal diameter of the second cable housing 32, the fibre optic cable does not snag against the end of the second cable housing 32 and simply passes into the second cable housing 32.
It will be appreciated that the diameter Bi of the first opening 62 will be greater than the inner diameter Al of the first cable housing 30, allowing for manufacturing tolerances. Also, the diameter B2 of the second opening 64 is less than the internal diameter B2 of the second main conduit 32 also allowing for manufacturing tolerances.
There is thus described a cable housing connector 10 which can be used to connect cable housings to one another prior to the installation of the cable housings in the ground and prior to the provision of the fibre optic cable within the cable housings.
The embodiment described herein provides the advantage that the danger of the fibre optic cable being snagged upon the cable housing connector 10 is obviated or mitigated.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the centring means need not comprise the gripping formations 49. Instead, the centring means may comprise a bore having a polygonal profile, such as a square or triangular profile.
