Abstract

The drying rack for laundry includes a number of drying rails (c) affixed to support arms (d). The support arms are supported by the front rail (e) of the range cooker (g) and rest against the wall (f) behind the range cooker, creating a diagonal shape. The drying rails and the support arms are perpendicular to each other. The support arms may include a shaped hook (j, Figure 6) to fit over the rail of the cooker. The drying rails may be inserted into blind holes (h, Figure 7) in the support arms and fixed. Six drying rails may be attached to the support arms.

Description

Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a laundry drying rack and more particularly a drying rack that rests diagonally over a range cooker supported by the front rail of the range cooker and the wall behind the range cooker.
Background Art
There are a number of existing designs for drying racks for use with range cookers. These fall into two categories -those which extend horizontally out from the range cooker as shown in figures 1 and 2 and those which rest on top of the range cooker as shown in figures 3 and 4.
Those which extend horizontally out from the range cooker are supported by one of two methods. The first is used for smaller drying rails and consists of an L shaped design, which allows one leg (a) to be hooked over the front rail of the range cooker for support as shown in figure 1. For larger drying rails a stand (b) is added to the L shaped design to provide further support and this extends diagonally down from the horizontal leg to rest against the front of the range cooker as shown in figure 2.
There are three fundamental problems with this type of design. The first is that because the drying rack extends horizontally out from the cooker this occupies a significant amount of space.
For those with smaller kitchens this can be impractical because in order to achieve enough drying space for a typical load of laundry the rack must extend a considerable distance. The smaller L shaped designs occupy a smaller space and are more practical but have a reduced drying space. The second problems is that it is not possible to use the range cooker while using the larger L shaped racks with a diagonal stand (b). With the smaller L shaped racks it is possible to use the lower ovens of the cooker but not the higher ovens. It would be possible to use the stove tops with a smarter L shaped rack but the risk of food spitting onto the drying laundry, along with any potential cooking smells would make this imprudent. The final problem is that very little heat is released from the front of the range cooker where the laundry is hung. The vast majority of heat rises vertically from the top of the cooker and is not used to dry the laundry.
The second category of existing drying racks are those which rest on top of the range cooker, typically either in a pyramid or rectangular design as shown in figures 3 and 4 respectively.
These avoid the majority of problems with the first category of horizontal drying racks. They make use of the space above the range cooker without extending out into the kitchen, all of the range cooker ovens can be operated and they make use of the majority of heat which rises vertically from the range cooker. The problem with this design is that in the available space on top of a range cooker neither the pyramid or rectangular design offers large enough rails at sufficient height to dry large items such as towels or sheets.
Technical Solution The drying rack of the present invention consists of horizontal rails for drying (c) attached to perpendicular support arms (d) as shown in figure 5. The support arms (d) are shaped to hook over the front rail (e) of the range cooker (g) as shown in figure 6 and rest against the wall (f) behind the range cooker (g). The drying rack then rests diagonally above the range cooker (g) with the drying rails (c) running horizontally across the top of the range cooker (g) as shown in figure 5.
The drying rails (c) are inserted into the support arms (d) via a blind hole (h) and fixed using mastic (i) as shown in figure 7.
Avantages By using the front rail (e) as a support and creating a diagonal shape over the range cooker (g) this allows all of the advantages of drying racks which rest on top of a range cooker but also offers greater drying space which can be used for a larger amount of laundry. This shape also allows for large items such as sheets and towels to be hung which would not fit on existing drying racks.

Claims (8)

  1. Claims 1. A drying rack for use above a range cooker comprising: a number of drying rails affixed to support arms which are supported by the front rail of the range cooker and rest against the wall behind the range cooker creating a diagonal shape.
  2. 2. The drying rack as claimed in claim 1 wherein the drying rails and the support arms are perpendicular to each other.
  3. 3. The drying rack as claimed in claim 2 wherein the drying rails are inserted into the support arms via a blind hole and are affixed to each other by mastic.
  4. 4. The drying rack as claimed in claim 1 wherein the support arm features a shaped hook that fits over the front rail of the range cooker.
  5. 5. The drying rack as claimed in claim 4 wherein the support arm rests flush against the wall behind the range cooker.
  6. 6. The drying rack as claimed in claim S wherein the support arms are longer than the depth of the range cooker causing the drying rack to rest at a diagonal angle.
  7. 7. The drying rack as claimed in claim 6 which is made up of two support arms that run parallel to each other.
  8. 8. The drying rack as claimed in claim 7 which is made up of 6 drying rails attached to the support arms. Ci(\C.C 2
