Abstract

251,662. Kellenberger, E. May 2, 1925, [Convention date]. Rope railways.-In a gravity railway in which the descending full tubs raise the empty tubs, a brake shaft h is mounted inside the drum a on which the cables attached to the tubs are wound, and two internally toothed rings b, c are fixed to the drum, each of which engages a train of gearing for rotating the shaft at a speed greater than that of the drum. one train being operative when the drum rotates in one direction and the other being operative when the rotation of the drum is revered. and each train rotating the shaft in the same direction. The drum rotates on circular flanges on two fixed head plates. Planet gears d mesh with the ring b and with a pinion i on the shaft h, and their axles are mounted in a flat ring e and a ratchet wheel f. A pawl g pivoted to the head plate engages the wheel f. The ring c gears with a pinion k mounted on a shaft l which carries also a sprocket wheel m. A chain n couples the wheel m to a sprocket p which is formed integral with one member o of a cone clutch. The sprocket p is axially movable on the shaft h by a short screw thread of fine pitch which allows it freely to rotate on the shaft after axial displacement in one direction. A collar s fixed to the shaft h forms a seat for a spring r which urges two slidable and rotatable discs separated by a ball bearing q towards the sprocket p and thus holds the member o in engagement with the coacting clutch member t which is axially immovable. The member t is integral with the drum of a band brake u which is carried by a stud on the adjacent head plate. An extension y of the shaft h is connected with a regulating brake of any type. the fixed part of which may be carried by the head plate.
