Abstract
An LED picture light includes modular light sources A, B which can be adjusted for output intensity and various levels of adjustment to give even light cover to the picture.
Description
Low Energy LED Picture Light -Patent Application
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The traditional picture frame or wall mounted lights for lighting paintings require high energy usage and have very little, if any, projected light and this results in an uneven illumination and often with only the top 1O-2O% of the picture being properly lit. The exception is the use of Tungsten Halogen lamps used with properly designed and adjustable reflectors which light an entire picture evenly. These lamps still have a high energy usage and project heat, along with the light, onto the picture, and require UV filtering.
The use of reflectors necessitates a deep profile housing, making the appearance unacceptable to many.
LED technology is rapidly changing, with new and improved versions replacing existing parts which makes many LED picture lights obsolete after a short time.
Solution The low energy picture light implements the latest LED (light emitting diode) technology in a design that has most of the advantages of the projected light' type of picture light whilst eliminating the disadvantages of high energy usage, UV, IR and can be delivered in low profile housing.
LED technology is a rapidly changing field with improved products available year after year. The modular design of this picture light allows the design to incorporate the best available LED in the future. It also makes it possible to retrofit new modules into these lights effectively making them future proof.
Each picture light may have only one or several LED modules depending on the picture to be lit. Each standard size is for a specific range of picture sizes and formats and includes portrait or landscape. The combination of these three elements create the picture light: -The number of linked LED modules; -The spacing of the LED modules; -The height and projection of the mounting arm.
Local factors are also considered, e.g. if limited room is available above a picture then a shorter arm longer light with more LED Modules may be specified to achieve the desired even spread of light over the entire surface of the picture.
Low Energy LED Picture Light -Patent Application At installation the light is setup and focussed on the picture by combining the following adjustments: a) The light head can be raised or lowered by loosening the screws in collar at the bottom of the mounting arm, adjusting the height and re-tightening the screws.
b) The light head housing can be tilted towards the front of the painting and secured with a locking screw.
c) The row of LED modules can be tilted independently of the light head housing to focus the centre of the beam appropriately.
Detailed Description
The key feature of the picture light is the ability to focus of the beam of light from the LED Module(s) [Fig3B] independently from the tilting of the light head housing [Fig3A,46]. This feature, coupled with the variable spacing facility of the LED Module(s) within the light head housing, is an important factor in achieving a more even illumination over the whole picture surface.
Other adjustments include the tilt of the light head housing [Fig3A,4B], the raising and lowering of the mounting arm in the frame bracket [Fig4A,6A,66]and the on-board dimming potentiometer [Fig2B,5A].
The LED and optical unit is modular [FiglA,1B] and configured [Fig 2A] depending on the size, shape and chiaroscuro of the picture.
One master module [FiglA] and a number of slave modules [FigiB] are possible. They are mounted on a heatsink element [FiglC,2C,3C] within the head housing [FigiD]. The number of modules defines the length of the light head housing [Fig2D].
The seven levels of adjustment: 1. The size of the picture arm and the height of the light head housing above the picture [Fig4A,4C,4D] 2. The projection of the light head housing in front the picture based on the chosen picture arm [Fig4C,4E] 3. The angle of the light head housing to the picture. [Fig3A,4B] 4. The number of LED modules, (i.e. light sources), defines the width of the light head housing.) [FiglA,1B,Fig2A,2D] Low Energy LED Picture Light -Patent Application 5. The spacing of the LED modules on the heatsink. [Fig3B]
Description (continued)
6. The angle of the LED modules within the light head housing.
[fig. 1.4] 7. The intensity of the illumination. [Fig2B,FigSA] The light head is mounted on an arm which is push fitted into a bracket mounted on the back of the frame or on the wall. The bracket has an automatic alignment feature [Fig6A] which keeps the light head parallel to the picture and secured against accidental removal [Fig6A].
The light head housing is connected to the end of the arm by an adjustable knuckle joint.
The modules are fixed at various preset pitches onto the heat sink, which itself can be rotated to direct the beam(s) of the light to the best position to evenly illuminate the surface of the painting.
The intensity of the illumination is adjusted via a trimming potentiometer mounted within the light head housing.
Applications are not limited to lighting pictures but would be applicable to applications such as lighting library shelves, music stands and lecterns, etc.
Claims (4)
- CLAIMS1. The light fixture uses light sources that comprise a master LED module with electronic control, and a number of linked slave modules each with its own LED and Optic and fixed to the heatsink channel at various positions.
- 2. The light fixture head housing has a heatsink channel that is fixed within the light head housing and that can be rotated within the housing.
- 3. A potentiometer module is mounted within the light fixture head housing which allows the intensity of the light output to be adjusted.
- 4. Future developments of LED's can easily be retro fitted avoiding replacement of the whole light fixture.
