Description

Airbag System for a Vehicle The invention relates to an airbag system for a vehicle according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
Such an airbag system for a vehicle is known from JR Hi 0217818 A. The airbag system comprises at least one airbag which is arranged in a front end region of a seat cushion of a seat. The airbag is deployable from a stowage position into at least one protective position thereby pushing at least one knee of a seat passenger upwards. The seat comprises the seat cushion and a cushion frame on which the seat cushion is mounted.
The cushion frame has a recess in which the airbag is arranged. Moreover, the airbag is arranged between the cushion frame and the seat cushion.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an airbag system of the aforementioned kind, by means of which airbag system the seat passenger can be restrained particularly advantageously.
This object is solved by an airbag system having the features of patent claim 1.
Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
In order to provide an airbag system of the kind indicated in the preamble of patent claim 1, by means of which airbag system a seat passenger can be restrained particularly advantageously, according to the present invention at least a portion of the airbag system, at least with respect to the protective position, is arranged in a region between the seat cushion and the hollow of the knee. In other words, the airbag is arranged between the seat and the knee joint with respect to the protective position. Thereby, the leg, in particular, the knee of the seat passenger can be moved particularly advantageously and efficiently so that the lower body of the seat passenger can be restrained in the case of an accident. Thus, the seat passenger can be protected against injuries. Especially, the airbag system according to the present invention facilitates an early loading of the lower body thereby helping reduce injuries. The airbag system is particularly useful in crash pulses with early and high initial decelerations.
By moving the knee upwards, the seat passenger's kinematics can be affected or changed such that head contact with interior parts of the vehicle can be avoided.
Moreover, the airbag system according to the present invention helps avoid the so called submarining-effect. The term "submarining-effect" describes the undesirable movement of the seat passenger sliding forward in the seat and out from under the seat belt in a frontal collision. It was found that the pelvis acceleration as well as the chest deflection can be reduced by the seat belt system in a frontal impact.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawing. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawing shows in the Fig. a schematic side view of an airbag system for a vehicle, the airbag system comprising at least one airbag arranged in a front end region of a seat cushion of a seat and being deployable from a stowage position into at least one protective position, wherein at least a portion of the airbag, at least with respect to the protective position, is arranged in a region between the seat cushion and the hollow of the knee of a seat passenger.
The only Fig. shows an airbag system 10 for a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle. The vehicle comprises a body having a floor 12. Moreover, the vehicle comprises at least one front seat 14 attached to the floor 12. The front seat 14 comprises a backrest 16 and a seat part 18 having a seat cushion 20 and a seat cushion carrier in the form of a seat pan 22. Alternatively, the seat cushion carrier can be configured as a seat cushion frame. The seat cushion 20 is mounted on the seat cushion carrier (seat pan 22). Moreover, the front seat 14 comprises a headrest 24 attached to the backrest 16.
As can be seen from the Fig., the front seat 14 is arranged in an interior 26 of the vehicle.
The vehicle further comprises a rear seat 28 arranged in the interior 26 and, with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, behind the front seat 14.
The Fig. also shows a seat passenger 30 sitting on the rear seat 28. The rear seat 28 comprises a backrest 32 and a seat part 34 having a seat cushion 36 and a seat cushion carrier in the form of a seat pan 38, the seat cushion 36 being mounted on the seat pan 38. The rear seat 28 is also attached to the floor 12.
The airbag system 10 comprises at least one sensor configured to detect an accident, in particular, a frontal collision of the vehicle. Moreover, the airbag system 10 comprises at least one airbag 40 arranged in a front end region 42 of the seat cushion 36. The airbag is deployable from a stowage position into at least one protective position shown in the Fig.. The airbag system 10 further comprises at least one inflator 44 configured to inflate the airbag 40 thereby deploying the airbag 40 from the stowage position into the protective position. Both the airbag 40 and the inflator 44 are mounted on the rear seat 28.
If a frontal collision of the vehicle is detected by the sensor, the airbag 40 is inflated by means of the inflator 44 so that the airbag 40 is deployed. Thereby, the knees 46 of the seat passenger 30 are pushed upwards away from the seat cushion 36 and the seat pan 38. This movement of the knees 46 is illustrated by directional arrow 48.
As can be seen in the Fig., at least with respect to the protective position, at least a portion of the airbag 40 is arranged in a region 50 between the seat cushion 36 and the hollow of the knee 52. Thus, the knee 46 can be moved particularly advantageously so that the lower body of the seat passenger 30 can be restrained by means of the airbag system 10. By inflating the airbag 40, it pushes the knee joint between tibia and femur upwards. Thereby, the forward movement of the upper body (chest, neck and head) can be reduced as well. It was found that a significant improvement in chest deflection and in pelvis acceleration as well as a lesser forward movement of the chest can be realized by means of the airbag system 10.
Preferably, with respect to the stowage position, the airbag 40 is arranged between the legs of the seat passenger 30 in the transverse direction of the vehicle. Advantageously, with respect to the protective position, the airbag 40 has a tubular shape so that the airbag 40 across at least a portion of the seat cushion 36 in the transverse direction of the vehicle such that both knees 46 of the seat passenger 30 can be pushed upwards by means of the airbag 40. Since the airbag 40, at least with respect to the protective position, is arranged between the knees 46 and the rear seat 28, the knees 46 can be moved particularly advantageously.
