Abstract

A packaging item, such as a postal wallet or envelope, formed from stiff but foldable board material comprises first and second parallel and superimposed major rectangular panels 1, 2. The major panels are connected together, along at least two edges, by joined gussets. The gussets are formed from a first gusset part 5 extending from the respective edge of the first major panel 1, a first gusset join flap 7 extending from the first gusset part, a second gusset part 8 extending from the respective edge of the second major panel 2, and a second gusset join flap 10 extending from the second gusset part. The first and second gusset join flaps 7, 10 are attached together. Such gussets facilitate opening of the item by separating the major panels 1, 2. The joined gussets may extend inwardly from the at least two edges and at least one of the first and second join flaps can have a plurality of crease lines extending parallel to the respective edge of the major panel. A continuous gusset 3, 4 may connect the two major panels and may extend outwardly from said major panels.

Description

PACKAGING ITEM
Background to the Invention
[0001] This invention relates to a packaging item suitable for mailing one or more products.
[0002] GB 2370831 describes a gusseted envelope formed from stiff but foldable board material. One problem with such an envelope is that it can be difficult to open the envelope in order to fill it.
Summary of the Invention
[0003] The present invention provides a packaging item formed from stiff but foldable board materiaL the item comprising first and second, generally mutually parallel and superimposed, major rectangular panels, said major panels being connected together, along at east two edges thereof, by joined gussets, each formed from a first gusset part extending from the respective edge of the first major panel, a first gusset join flap extending from the first gusset part, a second gusset part extending from the respective edge of the second gusset panel, and a second gusset join flap extending from the second gusset part, the first and second gusset join flaps being attached together.
[0004] Tn one embodiment, the joined gussets extend inwardly from said at least two edges. The gusset join flaps may extend inwardly from the gusset parts. At least one of the first and second join flaps may have a plurality of crease lines extending parallel to the respective edge of the major paneL In a particular embodiment, the first join flaps each have the pfurahtv of crease hnes, on a portion of the flap extending beyond the second join flap.
[0005] The joined gussets may be provided at two parafl& edges of the major pan&s. A continuous gusset may connect the major panels a'ong an edge thereof not being connected by one of the joined gussets. The continuous gusset may extend outwardW from the ma jor panels.
[0006] The pa ckaging item may include a closing flap extending from an edge of the first major panel forming part of an opening of the item. The closing flap may be provided with adhesive for sealing it to an outer side of the second major panel. The closing flap may have ears extending laterally therefrom and provided with adhesive means for sealing the ears to an outer side of the first major panel.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[0007] The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0008] Figure 1 is a plan of a blank for forming a packaging item according to an embodiment of the invention; [0009] Figure 2 shows a packaging item formed from the blank of Figure 2; [0010] Figure 3 shows the item of Figure 2, in the process of being closed; and [0011] Figure 4 shows the item of Figures 2 and 3 in the closed and sealed condition.
Detailed Description of Particular Embodiments
[0012] Figure 1 shows the "inside" of a blank cut and creased from double-faced corrugated paperboard. Dashed lines in Figure 1 indicate creases.
[0013] The blank comprises first and second rectangular major panels 1, 2, joined at crease lines by first and second continuous gusset panels 3, 4.
[0014] First gusset parts 5, extending from the respective lateral edges of the first major panel 1, are in the form of strips each having an oblique edge 6 that widens the respective gusset part in the oulward direction, facing the second gusset parts 8 described below. First gusset join flaps 7, extending outwardly from the respective first gusset parts 5, have a tapering portion adjacent the oblique edge 6 and an outer rectangular portion. The first gusset join flaps have a number (here six) of crease lines extending parallel to the lateral edges of the major panel 1.
[0015] Second gusset parts 8, extending from the respective lateral edges of the first major panel 1, are in the form of strips each having an oblique edge 9 that widens the respective gusset part in the outward direction, facing the first gusset parts 5. Second gusset join flaps 10, extending outwardly from the respective second gusset parts 8, have a tapering edge so that in each case they form a mirror image of the respective second gusset part 8.
[0016] A closing flap 11 extends from the edge of the first major panel 1 opposite the continuous gusset panel 3. The closing flap is provided with a number (here six) transverse crease lines near the first major panel 1. Rectangular ears 12 extend from the parts of the lateral edges of the closing panel 11 furthest from the first ma jor panel 1. An adhesive strip 13, protected by a release paper 14, extends along the whole of the edges of the ears 12 and the closing flap 11 furthest from the first major panel 1.
[0017] In order to form a packaging item, hereinafter called a "wallet" from the blank of Figure 1, the first and second gusset parts 5, 8 are folded through 180° so that they, and the respective gusset join flaps 7, 10, contact the respective major panels 1, 2. Next, the ma jor panels 1, 2 are brought together by folding along the crease line between the continuous gusset panels 3, 4. The first and second gusset join flaps 7, 10 are glued together to create a wallet having inwardly extending gussets Iormed from the gusset parts 5, 8 and the gusset join flaps 7, 10 as well as an outwardly extending gusset formed from the continuous gusset panels 3,4.
[0018] In order to make the wallet more compact, the ears 12 are folded inwardly and temporarily attached to the closing flap 11 by a spot oI glue in each case.
[0019] The wallet now appears as shown in Figure 2, which also shows products 15, here packaged DVDs, being inserted between the major panels 1, 2 and in particular between the first major panel 1 and the first gusset join flaps 7. Such insertion is facilitated by the fact that the thickness of the inwardly extending gussets maintains a gap between the major panels 1, 2, which allows easy opening of the wallet. As the products 15 are inserted, the wallet expands so that its internal thickness matches the combined thickness of the products. The first gusset join flaps 7 bend at their crease lines, retaining the products in place.
[0020] As shown in Figure 3, once the products 15 are in place, the ears 12 are opened outwards, detaching the temporary glue spots. The release paper 14 is then peeled off the adhesive strip 13.
[0021] Subsequenfiy, the dosing flap 11 is then f&ded a'ong at least two of its transverse crease lines to close the wallet. The wallet is then sealed by means of the adhesive strip 13, which attaches the closing flap 11 to the outside of the second major panel 2 and attaches the ears 12 to the outside oI the first major pan& 1. The "back" of the seated waflet appears as shown in Figure 4.
[0022] Closing the wallet in this manner achieves complete security and minimises the size of the packed product. The gussets provide V-shaped buffers which protect the product if dropped, for example on insertion through a letter box.
