Abstract

A foot pedal unit 1 for opening a door. The unit comprises a pedal 11 which is preferably connected to cable which may be located in sheath 3, the cable connected to a pivotal door. The unit may be used in conjunction with an existing door closer 2. Pulleys and/or gears may be used. A dynamo powered visual and/or audible warning alarm may be included to notify persons of movement of the door.

Description

Foot Pedal Push Unit This invention relates to a foot pedal operated door opening assembly. It would be particularly useful in a commercial washroom environment or public toilets where the cleanliness of a door handle could be hazardous to a person's health due to the transfer of surface bacteria via a contaminated door handle to the hands. It could also be used in restaurants whereby servers could easily open doors without the use of hands.
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a static pedal unit mounted to a nearby wall, incorporating a push pedal which when operated would enable the door to open via either a steel wired cable or synthetic or natural cord either encased in conduit or a protective sheath. This would be connected to either a bespoke opening unit or standard door closer or draw plate, mounted either on, above or adjacent to the door. The door opening mechanism is purely powered by the energy of the Foot Pedal Push Unit. This invention is designed to be used either integrally with or in conjunction with an existing door closer, it is not intended to take the place of the existing door closer.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: -Figure 1 shows the pedal (11) and pedal unit (1) mounted to an adjacent wall, connected to an existing door closer (2) via the energy transfer assembly system (3), -Figure 2 shows the pedal unit (1) plan view with the conduit entry (9) and pedal (10), -Figure 3 shows the energy transfer system (3) mounted on an adjacent wall and the cable connected directly to the door (4) via a bolted mount (5) fitted to a door closer.
The door opener has the advantage of not using any low-voltage electricity to power it and is designed to be durable and easy to operate.
The Foot Pedal Push Unit has the advantage of being able to be integrated with any existing door closer using simple brackets and br fixings.
A dynamo utilising the kinetic energy of the system would be used to power an extra-low voltage circuit with LED'S and or mini-speaker or alarm to provide visual or audible warnings to persons in the vicinity of the door's movements.
A gearing system will be used to reduce the necessary pedal travel to open large doors. I 2
