Abstract
A locking device to connect a motorcycle lift (paddock stand) to a bobbin on a motorcycle swinging arm (rear suspension arm) comprises a U bolt that attaches around all sides of the bobbin so that it is located lateral to the motorcycle but can still rotate.
Description
Locking device to securely attach a Motorcycle lift (Paddock Stand) to a Motorcycle.
A motorcycle may be sold without a central stand so the motorcycle may have no method of lifting the rear wheel clear of the ground for maintenance. They typically only have a side stand on the left side which means the motorcycle rests on both wheels and leans to the left on the side stand. Paddock stands are used to hook onto the rear suspension arms (swinging arms) and with a simple lever principal lift the rear wheel clear of the ground. In some cases motorcycles are supplied with a threaded hole in the swinging arms and a bobbin is screwed to this hole. The bobbin is a cylinder with the end diameters larger than the middle. The paddock stand is attached to the bobbin via a hook. If only one person is operating the paddock stand and the motorcycle leans to the left on its side stand then the left hook is engage first and as the motorcycle is lifted to a vertical position from its sidestand the right hook is engage before both sides are lifted together. During this process of engaging hooks the hook may be miss engaged causing the motor cycle to fall or the hooks can scrape on the swinging arm causing damage.
This patent is for a locking device to connect the paddock stand to the bobbin. A bar' is located under the curved part of the bobbin with typically a curved upper surface with a smaller diameter than the curved inner surface of the bobbin. A U bolt or similar is located around the curved part of the bobbin (sides and top) and is located on the bar so that the bobbin is located lateral (to the motorcycle) but can still rotate. The U bolt can be located in a hole by gravity alone, or be one or two nuts. If located by gravity or by one nut with some clearance it may be possible to rotate the U bolt to allow the bobbin to be located without unscrewing the nut. The shape of the bar underneath the bobbin or the upper part (U bolt) is not critical as long and the internal diameter' of the combined parts is greater than the smallest diameter of the middle of the bobbin with clearance to allow rotation but smaller than smallest end diameter of the bobbin to prevent the bobbin becoming detached.
Some existing paddock stands have a square section tube at the top at near the swinging arm. A square bar with a hook on the top is slid into the square tub. The fit of the square bar to the square tube ensure that the hook can not rotate. In this new design the hook is replaced the location bar which is welded at degrees to a square bar and the square bar slides into the square tube of the paddock stand. The actual attachment of the locking assembly to the paddock stand is not critical and the clamping device could be attached from below if mechanically attached rather than relying on gravity to keep it secure.
This design is attaches the paddock stand to the motorcycle before any lifting occurs while the motorcycle is resting on its sidestand for example. Claim
