Abstract

251,130. Stempelwerk Ges., and Ludwig, H. June 12, 1925. Disc; force-transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear.-In brake hubs comprising a single brake or two independent brakes of the multiple-disc type, the discs are associated with one or two sleeves or like members loosely mounted on the hub axle to take up the torsional stresses, means being provided to transfer such stresses to the vehicle frame at both ends of the hub. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, independent brakes each comprising two sets of discs 3, 4 have the discs 3 keyed to the hub 7 and the discs 4 formed with square apertures and carried on externally squared sleeves 8 rotatably mounted on the axle 1. The adjacent ends of the sleeves 8 are coupled together by members 23 secured thereon and provided with interengaging claws 24. The members 23 abut against a collar 2 on the axle. The outer disc 4 of each brake is connected by claws 22 to a member 20 carried on an externally squared portion of a member 9 which is screwed on the end of the axle and carries the cone 10 of the usual ball bearing. The cone 10 engages the member 20 'by means of inclines 19 and is rotated to apply the brake by a lever 16, and the member 9 is coupled to a ring 12 carrying an arm 14 secured to the vehicle frame. The lever 16, Fig. VII, is formed with teeth 15 to engage corresponding teeth on the cone 10. the teeth 15 being unsymmetrically placed with respect to the axis shown in dotted lines so that in addition to a coarse adjustment of the lever obtained by engagement of the teeth 15 with those of the cone, a fine adjustment may be obtained by reversing the lever. In modified arrangements, the two brakes may be mounted on a single sleeve which is formed with a central collar to separate the sets of discs of the brakes, and when a single brake is provided, the discs are mounted on a sleeve coupled to the frame at each end of the hub as described in connection with Fig. 1. In the modification shown in Fig. IV, the end discs of the set 4: keyed to the axle-sleeve 8 are coupled to a right-hand end member 10<a> and to a member secured on the other end of the axle 1. The member 10<a> is mounted to slide on the cone 10<b> secured on the axle 1 and is pressed against the discs by screw-threaded engagement with the right-hand member 10 which is rotated by the lever 16. Packing rings 26 for retaining lubricant in the brake portion of the hub may be mounted in grooved rings 25 or grooves on a hub-member such as the member 10. In the further modification shown in Fig. VIII, in which the brake is operated by a sliding member 27 moved by screw-threaded engagement with a sleeve rotated by the lever 16, the member 27 is slotted at its inner end 28 to engage claws on the disc 4 and to receive the arms of a crossmember 29 keyed to the axle. The torque reaction is thus transmitted through the member 20 and axle 1 to the ends of the hub, while axial thrust is taken by the member 27. The brake discs may be mounted in a central position in the hub, the internal hub mechanism on each side thereof being of approximately equal volume to provide for uniform heat conduction towards the ends of the hub.
