Abstract

A system for attaching a product to a mounting structure (6, Fig 6) comprises a product casing 4 having a retainer (9, Fig 6) for securely holding an attachment fastener 7, preventing the fastener from accidentally falling out of the casing during transport , blocking a mechanism of the product or becoming lost altogether. Each retainer has a primary 10 and secondary latch 11 within a guide 12 for the fastener, wherein the fastener is initially trapped between the two latches and upon attaching of the product to a mounting structure the fastener is pushed past the secondary latch toward a location hole in the support surface (1, Fig 1). In a preferred embodiment the product is a height and inclination adjustment mechanism for an office chair.

Description

Fastener retention System for Product Mounting This invention concerns a new way of mounting a product onto or underneath a support surface. The product here is an adjustment system for office chairs or similar thrniture. The established way of mounting such products is shown in figs I to 3.
The product casing has an external casing which comprises two or four flanges which are arranged to protrude from the product casing in the plane of the support surface of the mounting structure which is the underside of the seat of an adjustable office chair.
These flanges are predrilled with holes allowing the product to be attached to the support surface by means of standard fasteners which would normally be supplied with the product.
This is the first drawback of the known systems. Since the fasteners are supplied separately they are difficult to mate with the pre threaded holes or even get lost altogether.
Also, since the flanges have necessarily to extend beyond the size of the product, the area of support surface required increases, sometimes considerably.
A second drawback of the known systems is that the flanges need to be strong, i.e. thicker material, which increases the cost of the prodtict without confribttting anything to the product itself.
Moreover, the aesthetics of the product suffers from the addition of the flanges sticking out from the sides of the product.
An easy answer to the problem of the flanges would be to drill fastener support holes through the casing and to provide fasteners of sufficient length to reach through the product into the support surface of the mounting structure.
However, the product casing in maLly cases may not be rigid enough and could deform under the pressure of the tightened fasteners, hence spoiling the aesthetics of the product and possibly preventing it form operating properly.
Thus the fasteners will need to reach through the outer casing and their heads rest against the surface of the prodttct which is in contact with the mounting structure, which surface is also referred to as the "top plate" of the product.
Such an arrangement would be very inconvenient as the fasteners could easily be lost inside the product casing and interfere with the operation of the product and possibly render it useless.
The present invention aims to alleviate the above problems. It is defined by the claims, in particular claim 1.
If the attachment means could be accommodated safely and rigidly inside the perimeter of the product, avoiding thc above mentioned problems, the overall aesthetic appcarancc of the product would be improved and render the product mounting stronger and the product itself more compact.
The solution is to retain the fastener safely inside the product, accessible from the outside of the product by means of a suitable tool of sufficient length.
This is achieved by means of a fastener retainer attached to the product top plate. This retainer may be a separate part or integral to said top plate.
The fastener retainer has two latches. A primary latch which prevent the fastcner from falling out of the retainer and a secondary latch which stops the active end of the fastener protruding beyond the top plate of the product. This arrangement avoids the fastener being knociced in fransit or the fastener damaging another product whcn scvcral arc packcd closely in the same containcr.
Assembly of the fastener retainer and the fastener is as follows: the fastener head is forced past the primary latch as far as the secondary latch. There the fastener is held between the two latches until the product is to bc attached to its rnolLnting structure.
At that point the fastener is pushed, by means of a suitable tool such as a screw driver, past the secondary latch toward the hole in the mounting structure and fastened into the mounting structure until its head is tight against the top platc and conscquently holds the product tightly to thc mounting structure.
Should the product need to be removed from its mounting sfructure, the fasteners are undone and will be retained in the product casing by means of the primary fastener retaining latches.
With thc secondary latches bcing flexibic, the fastcners arc hcld morc or lcss in their original positions ready to be retightened when the product is again fastened to the mounting structure.
The invention vi11 now be described in greater detail with reference to the figures.
Figures I to 3 show the state of the art and Figures 4 106 show the details of the present invention.
The rclevant parts are numbered in the following manner: Support surface (underside of office chair seat) Flanges 2 Product casing 3 Top plate 4 Bottom plate 5 Mounting structure (office chair or similar furniture) 6 Fastener (screw) 7 Tool (screw driver, Allan key or similar) Fastener retainer 9 Primary latch 10 Secondary latch 11 Fastener guide 12 Figure 1 illustrates the conventional way of attaching a product to a support structure.
A product is shown in the position to be attached in the known manner to a mounting structure (6), which is an office chair or a similar piece of frirniture.
The product casing (3) has flanges (2) sticking out beyond the product casing (3).
The flanges (2) are pre-drilled to allow the product to be fastened to the support surface (I) of the mounting structure (6).
Figure 2 shows the same product turned through 900 with the attachment fasteners (7) in position to bc fastcned down by means of a suitabic tool (S), such as a scrcwdriver, Allan kcy or similar and Figure 3 shows the product attached by us top plate (4)10 the support surface (I) of the mounting structure (6).
The advantages of the invention will become evident with the detailed description of figures 4 to 6.
Figure 4 shows the inventive product. Its top plate (4) forms a lid for the product casing (3) keeping the whole compact with no flanges sticking out from its casing (3).
Figure 5 shows one of the fastener retainers (9) in more detail. The fastener (7) is introduced into thc retainer guide (12) before the top plate (4) is fitted onto the product casing (3). The fastener (7) is pushed past the secondary latch (11) up against the primary latch (10). This latch (10) stops the fastener (7) from falling out of the retainer and into the casing (3). The secondary latch (10) keeps the fastener (7) iii a position more or less flush with the outer surface of the casing's (3) top plate (4).
The secondary latch (11) springs back into position to hold the fastener (7) in the said desired position.
Figure 6 shows the product being fixed to the mounting stntcture (1). A suitable tool (8) such as a screw driver is introduced through the holes in the casing (3) to engage fastener (7) and pushing it past the secondary latch (11) to connect with the support surface (1) and engage said fastener into pre-threaded holes in said surface (I).
