Lathes.-In a machine for making wood-wool according to the method described in the parent Specification the work is fed automatically to the cutter-head by an arm pivoting in a plane perpendicular to that of the cutters. In one form, the work b<12>, Fig. 1, is mounted between driving- spindles and dead centres carried by spiders b<6> having two or more arms. The spiders are relatively adjustable to accommodate different lengths of wood and are rotated slowly so as to feed the work to the cutter-head i by means of worm-gear b<14> driven by a belt-pulley b<19>, the cutting-operation being completed when the active arms of the spiders are perpendicular to the cutter-head. The work-pieces are rotated rapidly about their axes by belts or gear wheels driven by a central wheel on the axis b<3>. To allow the spiders to be rotated rapidly in order to bring another workpiece into contact with the cutter-head the worm b<14> may be dropped out of engagement with its wheel by means of a hand-lever b<18> against the action of a spring b<17> which normally maintains the worm-gear in mesh. The slide b on which the spiders are mounted is adjustable to and from the cutter-head by a hand-operated screw b<1>. In another form a single work-piece is rotatably mounted at e, Fig. 4, on a pair of arms e<1> pivoted at e<2> and oscillated to and from the knife-plate by a rotating cam e<6> worm-driven from conepulleys e<8> and a weight e<9>. In two other forms, the cutter-head rotates about a vertical axis and a vertically adjustable slide carries a pair of workholding devices, either similar to that shown in Fig. 1 or to that shown in Fig. 4.
