Abstract
250,494. Switchgear & Cowans, Ltd., and Neep, G. H. Nov. 26, 1925. Cut-out anangements. - In a distribution or supply system protected against overload or leakage or both, manually-operated switches 10 are utilized to connect any section to earth directly or through a resistance 11, thus producing an artificial earth, and so, by means of the leakage protective apparatus or the overload devices, or both, trip-out the circuit-breakers of the section. As shown applied to an AC, three-phase section protected by overload coils 5 which trip the eircuit-breaker and by core-balance leakage transformer 6 having a secondary winding 7 connected to the leakage tripping coil 8, one of the phases is connected, at will, to earth through the resistance 11 by closing the switch 10. This brings into action one or both of the tripping- devices to open the circuit-breaker. An earthing connection such as 9, 10, 11 may be associated with each section and, by arranging the trip coils with graded settings and the resistances 11 graded from section to section, when a switch 10 is closed only that tripping-device adjoining the artificial earth connection and on the side nearer to the source of supply is energized and no others. A master multiple switch at the station may be used instead of the single switches, or one or more limiting resistances variable to the requisite values to give the desired selectivity. The arrangement is applicable to normally insulated systems wherein the protective devices is brought into action by discharge across a sparkgap as in Specification 219,717. In such cases the switch 10 completes a circuit between its supply conductor and the earthed side of the spark-gap.
