Abstract

250,379. Wade, F. R. March 24, 1925. Drilling-machines; attachments for drilling; chucks.-In a vertical spindle drilling-machine the spindle is either wholly or partly hollow and is of polygonal cross-section so as to rotate with but be vertically slidable in a driven sleeve. The sleeve p may be cylindrical internally for the greater part of its length, one or both ends being swaged down to fit the octagonal &c. drill spindle r. The lower'end of the drill spindle is tapered and split, to constitute a tool chuck, the. jaws being closed by a screw cap 7 and the drill being positively driven by the engagement of a flat on its shank, with a pin 9 passing through the drill spindle and a collar 8 screwed thereon. The driving pulley q may be cast on to the sleeve p and forms a seat for a spring y, Fig. 1, which retains the drill in its uppermost position. The frame of the machine may be of aluminium or aluminium alloy, and is provided with screwed lugs in its base for attachment to a bench or lathe bed &c. The work table 10 has a hollow stem which may be provided at its upper end with a recess to receive a disc or headed plug for use when drilling small articles.
