Abstract

A cinema content distribution system uses a web-based application which controls a digital content delivery system, playback scheduling and automatic cue-list or playlist creation. A web-store 1 provides control over a method of digital distribution 2 and scheduled playback 3. The web-store allows exhibitors to browse content from multiple distributers 4, purchase this content 6 and select the show playback parameters. The system automatically creates cue-lists for the selected content which may include cinema trailers or other advertising 5. The cue lists may be created using the film categorization category, genre or historic sales or demographic data. A subset of available features may be provided when the system is offline.

Description

A cinema content distribution system This invention relates to a method of simplifying the sourcing, distribution and playback control of content for cinema exhibitors and distributors.
Currently for a cinema exhibitor to show a feature, they must negotiate directly with cinema distributors. A prioe structure is Lhen fixed, and Lhe conbenL is physically seaL Lo Lhe exhibitor. It is then up to the exhibitor to transfer content to their servers, schedule the playback and manually create cue-lists. This process is tco complex and labour intensive for many smaller exhibitors.
This new innovation substantially simplifies this process by allowing it to be managed from a central server via a web-store interface. This automates all aspects of the process including simple pricing, content delivery, scheduling of playback and automatic creation of cue-lists.

In figure 1, a web-store 1 forms the center of the cinema content delivery system. Ihe exhibitor venue manager 8 has access to this web store via a user interface (UI) 7. The user interface may consist of either a PC application, a mobile application or a web page. The web store provides a single point of access to content from multiple distributors 4 and may link into a billing system 6. When content is chosen by the venue manager, the web store automatically controls the content delivery system 2, automatic cue list generation 5 and playback scheduling 3 to allow the feature to play correctly on the playback server 9.
In figure 2, the venue manager is able to control the web store server via a user interface 18. Information from the web server is then passed to the control server 10. The control server provides scheduling and automatic cue-list creation functionality. The cue-list and scheduling data is passed to the playback server 13 and the content delivery server is instructed to serve the correct content 11. The content delivery server distributes the required content to the playback server in time for the scheduled playback. The playback server is connected to a digital projector 15 and an audio processor 14 to allow playback. It may also optionally be connected to the building automation system 17. Optionally the venue manager may directly control the playback server to ensure the system still functions offline 16.
Figure 3 shows the auto cue-list creation method. A cue-list generating algorithm 19 is used to create the playback cue list. This may utilise data about the selected feature film 21 such as genre and classification. It may also utilise data about the individual exhibitor 22 such as demographics type of venue and sales history. Ihere may also be the option for the user to customise the auto generated cue-list 20.
Figure 4 shows the current method of film distribution. Various distributors 25 encode films and then physically deliver the content on a hard disk drive. The exhibitor must then ingest the content to a server 23 before they can begin playback 24.
The proposed innovation is described in figure 5. here the separate distributors 27 send one copy of the content to a central distribution company. They then encode the content 26 and use a digital delivery method to deliver the content to the exhibitors 28.
Figure 6 shows an existing method for a digital film distribution. Distribution servers 30 send film content directly to exhibitor playback servers 31. This is done via a packet based network or a satellite distribution system 32.
Figure 7 shows the inventions proposed distribution method.
This utilises a peer to peer delivery network to allow more efficient delivery. Content is sent directly from the distribution server to the playback server 32. It is also distributed between various playback servers 33. This allows for quicker delivery times.
Figure 8 shows the existing traditional method of film distribution. Exhibitors 34 deal directly with distributors 35 to request a film and negotiate agreements. A third party company 36 then arranges for the physical delivery of content to the exhibitor. The new innovation is shown in figure 9. A digital distributor 37 provides a unified interface between distributors 35 and exhibitors 34. This interface is in the form of a web store. No direct contact between the distributors and exhibitors is required.
Figure 10 shows the current method of an exhibitor scheduling playback. A distributor 39 delivers the film feature, advertising content and trailer content to the exhibitor 38.
The content must then be manually ingested into the digital server. The cue-list is manually created by an operator and playback started at the correct time. Figure 11 shows the new innovation. The cinema content distribution system provided by a digital distributor 40 provides automated digital distribution, cue-list generation and playback scheduling. No manual intervention is required by the exhibitor.
