Abstract
A mounting point for locating over a vertical or near vertical drop, with no moving parts, from which to suspend fall arrest devices, lifting devices or for mounting any suspended item. The anchor device allows the suspended item or the mounting accessories to be pulled in-board of the drop to facilitate positioning or removal of the suspended item from a position of relative safety. The device is a plate with a channel or slot provided in it, in which the fall arrest device is located. The device utilises a detent at one end of the channel to locate the item to be suspended in a firm position. There may be a frame to suspend the mounting anchor from (see figure 3).
Description
I
Methods and Apparatus for providing mounting points for fall-arrest protection.
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for providing mounting points for fall-arrest protection, especially fall-arrest systems that may be installed and removed for statutorily required periodic inspections and/or maintenance or to be moved to an alternative location.
Background to the invention
There are currently many vertical ladders in use to access high areas on buildings, silo's, oil rigs etc. These ladders are often only protected by a safety cage commonly known as a backscratcher'. In the absence of sufficient fall protection it is desirable to utilise an inertia block steel cable device such as currently widely available.
This invention has been devised to allow mounting of said fall arrest blocks above vertical ladders and indeed any vertical access including climbing walls, gantries, telegraph and electricity pylons etc. The inertia block fall arrest devices have a requirement for periodic inspection every 6 months, additionally they may need to be removed for maintenance and also when required to utilise them in alternative locations.
In order to be removed the person removing the inertia block would with a fixed mounting point as is traditionally used have to work directly above the drop which the inertia block has been utilised to protect the user from falling down.
The invention is designed to offer a suitably strong mounting point for attaching inertia blocks or indeed any device mounted over a vertical drop. The advantage of the invention is that the inertia block or other device (Gin wheel, hoist, block and tackle etc.) May be pulled in from the drop so that the person who removes the device can remove it from the relative safety of the horizontal surface at the top.
The device is designed as a non moving part so that there is little or no degradation of the device.
This is favoured over a swing out mounting point or any mounting point with moving parts so that there is no wear factors which may affect the strength of the mounting point.
Claims (3)
- Claims 1. Mounting point for fall arrest devices with no moving parts that may be securely positioned above vertical ascents, allowing the fall arrest device to be positioned above the vertical drop whilst also allowing the fall arrest device to be pulled inboard of the drop to facilitate safer and easier removal and repositioning of the fall arrest device.
- 2. Mounting point for hoists, block and tackle, gin wheels or other lifting devices which allows the device to be mounted and positioned directly over a vertical drop without requiring a person to have to reach out over the drop to attach or remove the lifting device, instead allowing the lifting device to be pulled inboard of the drop to facilitate safer and easier positioning and removal of the lifting device.
- 3. Mounting point for any suspended item to allow positioning of the item over a vertical drop without the person having to reach out over the drop to position or remove the item or the parts which the item is suspended over the drop with, i.e. steel cables, ropes, engineered frames or other fixed parts.
