Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; cooling; draining.-A centrifugal seal for the shaft 3 of a centrifugal or other machine comprises a chamber 31 carried by the shaft and containing liquid into which extends a diaphragm 37 carried by the casing. The chamber 31 is formed by a flanged disc 9 on a sleeve 4 secured to the shaft, on to which a cover 30 is screwed, grooved plates 32, 32<1> being secured to the inner faces of the disc 9 and cover 30. The diaphragm 37 is carried by a sleeve 35 secured to a base plate 14, the latter being held in position by a cover 10. Liquid is supplied by a pipe 18 to a chamber 17<1> in the base plate and execess liquid may pass to an outlet leading to a cooler from which liquid is returned to the chamber 17<1>. Vanes 9<a> on the upper surface of the disc 9 cause a circulation of air from the bearing space 4<1> to the outlet. Liquid may pass by passages from the chamber 17<1> to the space below the diaphragm 37, or may pass to the space above the diaphragm through the annular space between the sleeve 35 and a surrounding sleeve carrythe diaphragm. In the arrangement shown, a constant level is maintained in a supply box 46 by means of a partition 47, and liquid is drawn into the chamber 31 through the annular space between the sleeve 35 and a sleeve 42 depending from the cover 30, by the centrifugal action of a radial pipe 50 in the chamber 31. Liquid and air escape from the downwardly-flaring chamber 15 surrounding the chamber 31 through a passage 51<1> to the chamber 17<1>.
