Abstract

250,067. Drager, A. B. June 29, 1925. Inhalers.-The gases to be administered, such as a nutrient gas and an anµsthetic, are delivered from cylinders a, b through reducing valves c, f to a bag m whence they pass through a valve n and pipe o to a mask p. The exhaled gases pass through a pipe q, valve r, and cock s to the bag m either through a pipe u<1> or through a pipe u and a vessel t containing an absorbent of carbon dioxide; the cock s can be manipulated so that either or both of the pipes u, u<1> is or are operative. An automatic and adjustable relief valve w is provided. In use, the anµsthetic is delivered to the amount required to produce the desired depth of anµsthesia, whereafter the supply is cut off; the nutrient gas, such as oxygen, is delivered continuously. The exhaled gases may be freed from carbon dioxide by passage through the vessel t or may be passed wholly or in part through the pipe u<1> to retain the carbon dioxide, serving as a respiratory stimulant, in the gas mixture. Alternatively carbon dioxide may be completely removed from the exhaled gases and fresh carbon dioxide supplied from a third cylinder to the bag m.
