The lever 4 may be raised and rotated about pivot 5 through 270 degrees until it engages a groove 8 in the top of the closure and extends horizontally from the uppermost part of the closure, opposite the side it began at rest. The lever 4 may be able to rotate the closure 1 for removal when it is engaged in the groove 8. The lever may be rotated further than 270 degrees to pull off or flip part of the closure, the flip top and lever remaining attached for restoration to the starting positions. The lever may be shaped to follow the contours of the bottle, jar or container when initially ar rest.

Description

1
AN EASY OPEN TOP FOR BOTTLES OR JARS
The present invention relates to bottle top which is an easy open screw type or flip top closure for a conventional bottle or jar. The closure incorporates a lever 5 system which can be brought into use by the user so as to facilitate easy opening of a flip top or screw type closure.
This device is particularly suitable for use by disabled persons or persons who would have difficulty in opening a conventional flip top or screw type bottle or 10 jar. These people may not be disabled but may be lacking in strength or the freedom of movement required for opening a conventional container.
Currently there are a number of solutions available in the art to assist people with some form of physical impairment which would make it difficult for them to 15 open a conventional screw type bottle top, a conventional flip type bottle top or a jar top with similar features.
These solutions can be brought together in two groups.
20 Firstly there are a large number of appliances which are designed in the form of a tool which is brought into use to attach to the bottle or jar in some way to provide grip and facilitate removal of the top. There are far too many of these devices to discuss them comprehensively but some typical examples are: -
2
JP2009126517, is a simple plate attachment with no moving parts which is pushed on to a bottle top and provides an extended grip area.
CN2931441 is a complex mechanical single handed device for opening screw top bottles based on a hand gripped plier. This particular example is also 5 equipped with automatic rotation capability.
JP2000313497, is a wall mounted gripper device which will receive a bottle top which it can grip whilst the bottle is manually turned.
All of the above devices require a certain amount of physical agility and are not 10 necessarily suitable for those who have some degree of physical impairment particularly in their hands.
The second group of devices to be found in the art, are more closely associated with the present invention and they are devices which consist of top or caps 15 which are specifically designed for ease of use and are, when attached, also part of the bottle or jar. Just a few examples are given below for technical background as follows: -
CN2858552 is a pump top soap dispenser designed for operation by someone 20 with only one hand available for use.
JP2005298058 is a series of moulded fixed wings attached to the top of a bottle cap to facilitate grip.
JP2011168335 is an elliptical or near elliptical top which since it is not completely round will facilitate grip.
3
W02011129920 is a flip top handle built into a can top which can be operated by one hand and re-sealed.
JP2009154956 consists of a screw top incorporating a flip top lid with a lever operated release which can be re-sealed.
5 JP2006282274 is a bottle top incorporating a sliding lever. The lever can be moved sideways to provide an extension to the top so that it may be gripped and rotated easily.
It is thought that the last two examples are those which are closest to the 10 technical area in which the present invention resides. However all of these examples including the last two still require a certain degree of physical agility which could easily be beyond the capability of many physically impaired people.
The present invention seeks to provide a complete solution to the opening of 15 containers by the physically impaired making it very easy to open a container equipped with the invention even for someone who has no grip at all.
In this specification the words "at rest" refer to a lever in its starting position before use. In a preferred version described herein that is where if the bottle is 20 held with the closure at the top the said lever is vertical along the side of the bottle. Other embodiments provide for the starting point of the lever to be in any suitable position and the shape of the lever to be any suitable shape.
According to the invention there is provided a bottle top which is an easy open 25 screw type or flip top closure for a conventional bottle or jar. The said bottle or
4
jar closure incorporates a lever attached to the said closure and in use extending from the uppermost part of the closure vertically down the side of the container and in a preferred version following the profile of the container.
5 In addition to the preferred version other embodiments provide for a space between the lever, when at rest vertically down the side of the container, and the body of the said bottle or any other suitable arrangement where the lever may be more easily grasped.
10 The said lever can be lifted and moved through approximately 270 degrees so that in use it finishes extending horizontally from the uppermost part of the closure on the opposite side of the container to that which it began when at rest and engaging with a groove in uppermost part of the said closure by entering into the said groove. This groove is not essential for a flip top type of closure.
15
In the case of a screw type of closure, in the position so far described the said lever may now be used to rotate the closure by moving the lever sideways to unscrew the closure and opening the jar or bottle by removing the closure from the jar or bottle.
20
A flip top closure incorporates a moveable cap in the uppermost part of the closure which is part of the closure and this cap covers and seals a spout or opening through which the contents of the bottle may be extracted. The said cap is attached to the closure on a first side by hinged means and attached to
25 the previously described lever on a second side by hinged means.
5
In the case of a flip top closure the lever may be moved from its starting point in the vertical position to a position where it has rotated by approximately 270 degrees exactly as previously described for a screw type of closure. But in the 5 case of a flip top closure the lever may be further rotated to pull the moveable cap into the open position.
The invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: -
10
Figure 1. Shows a flip top bottle in the sealed state, with the lever which is attached to the moveable cap, extending down the side of the container when at rest.
15 Figure 2. Illustrates the half open position for a flip top bottle with the moveable cap partially removed.
Figure 3. Illustrates the fully open position for a flip top bottle with the lever resting on the opposite side of the bottle to the one where it rests 20 when fully closed. The said lever has completely removed the moveable cap from the sealed position. The hinged arrangement for the attachment of the handle to the moveable cap and the attachment of the moveable cap to closure or bottle top can also be seen.
25
6
Figure 4. Is a close up of the closed position of a flip top bottle
Figure 5. Shows a close-up of the half open position for a flip top bottle.
5 Figure 6. Is a close-up of the flip top bottle in a fully open position.
Figure 7. Shows the invention used with a jar which may be either a flip top or a screw type.
10 Figure 8. Shows the lever moved into engagement with a groove which facilitate opening of a screw type closure.
Turning now to Figures 1, 2 and 3, these illustrate a flip top type of closure in three stages of opening. Figure 1 shows the bottle top fully closed, Figure 2 15 shows the bottle top 1, partially open with the cap 2, partially removed and Figure 3 shows the cap fully removed.
The closure 1, is equipped with a moveable cap 2 which covers and seals a spout 3 which is shown in figure 3.
20
Returning to figure 1, a bottle 7 is equipped with a flip top closure 1. This closure has lever 4 extending downwards following the profile of the bottle 7. The lever 4, is pivoted at 5 and to operate it is moved upwards in an ark through approximately 270 degrees so that the flat surface 9 engages with a grove or 25 depression 8 in the cap.
7
In a screw type closure which is not illustrated but is similar to the jar shown in Figures 7 and 8 when the lever reaches the point described above the top may be rotated to unscrew it.
5
For a flip top closure as illustrated in figures 1, 2 and 3, further pressure on the lever continues the travel of the lever and lifts the cap 2 from the closure leaving the cap suspended on a hinge 6, with the lever now on the opposite side of the bottle.
10
Figures 4,5 and 6 are cross sections and show a close up of the same arrangement of a flip top closure as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3. It will be seen that for this flip top arrangement it is not necessary for the flat surface 9, of the lever 4, to engage fully in the grove 8.
15
An alternate arrangement can be seen in Figures 7 and 8. A flask, jar bottle or any other suitable container 10 of any suitable shape is equipped with a lever 13 which is attached to a closure 11 by means of hinge 14 and follows the profile of the container to rest vertically along the side of the container 10. In the 20 case of a screw type closure to remove the lid the lever 13 is moved upwards and folded over to engage in a groove 12 so that in the position shown in figure 8 the closure may be turned or unscrewed.
It will be understood that the arrangements above are given as examples only 25 and that numerous variations and embodiments are possible within the present
8
disclosure relating to the use of a lever as described in conjunction with a bottle or jar closure. For example the lever may be designed to provide a space between the bottle and the lever when at rest or any other suitable configuration embodying a lever. In this alternate configuration the degree of movement to 5 reach the horizontal, previously described as approximately 270 degrees may be less than 270 degrees to reach the horizontal opening position. Also the continued movement beyond this position for a flip top version would still be present
10 The invention is therefore limited in scope only by the scope of the claims themselves.
