Abstract

249,730. Roos, W. July 31, 1925. Rudders; steering by rotary cylinders and the like utilizing Magnus effect.-Rudders comprising rotatable cylinders utilizing the Magnus effect are driven by electric motors with means for controlling the speed by regulating the voltage supply. A bow rudder mav be fitted in addition to the rear rudder, or two rudders may be placed one on each side of the screw. Each rudder comprises a hollow roller 1 secured to a shaft 2 suitably journaled on the hull, a motor 3 on a supporting frame 4 being employed to rotate the rudder. Generators placed near the bridge supply current to the motor. A rheostat is placed in the circuit and is coupled to the steering wheel, the arrangement providing for increase in voltage proportionate to the turning of the wheel.
