Description
Seat Apparatus for a Vehicle The invention relates to a seat apparatus for a vehicle according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
It is well known from the general prior art to use a seat apparatus in a vehicle, in particular in utility vehicles, e.g. long haul trucks. Long haul truck drivers usually sit for many hours of the day in the respective seat apparatus, which can result in fatigue and potential discomfort. In order to avoid fatigue and potential discomfort, the driver should be able to change position, preferably between sitting and standing, so as to relieve the said symptoms of being in a confined space for long stretches of time. The seat apparatus should not only allow the driver to change position, but also to change position while maintaining operation of the vehicle, thus the driver can operate the vehicle for many hours without suffering from said symptoms.
Such a seat apparatus can be found in US 5364151. This seat apparatus for a vehicle, * in particular for a utility vehicle, comprises a seat section having a seating surface for * supporting the buttocks of an occupant of the seat apparatus. The seat apparatus further *" * comprises a backrest section for supporting the back of the occupant, the seat apparatus * being adjustable between at least one sitting position, in which the seating surface extends substantially horizontally, and at least one standing position, in which the seating surface extends substantially vertically. Moreover, the backrest section in the standing position is adjusted in a higher position than in the sitting position. However, the drawback * e to this seat apparatus is its cumbersome operability.
It therefore is the task of the present invention to provide a seat apparatus of the previously mentioned kind, which has a particularly easy and comfortable operability.
This task is solved by a seat apparatus having the features of claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial further developments are indicated in the remaining claims.
In order to further develop a seat apparatus for a vehicle, in particular a utility vehicle, of the kind indicated in the preamble of patent claim 1 in such a way that a particularly easy and comfortable operability of the seat apparatus is realizable, the seat apparatus according to the present invention comprises at least one first actuator for adjusting the seat section and at least one second actuator for height-adjusting the backrest section between the sitting position and the standing position. The seat apparatus can be adjusted very easily between the sitting position and the standing position by the usage of the actuators, so that the driver can change position while maintaining operation of the vehicle.
For realizing a particularly smooth transition between the sitting positionand the standing position in one embodiment of the invention it is envisaged that the seat section and the backrest section are adjustable simultaneously by means of the respective actuators when adjusting the seat apparatus between the sifting position and the standing position.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention the seat apparatus comprises a scissor lift, by means of which at least the seat section is height-adjustable between the sitting position and the standing position. Advantageously, both the seat section and the backrest section are height-adjustable between the sitting position and the standing position by means of the scissor lift. Thus, the seat section and the backrest section especially in the standing position can be height-adjusted and thereby adapted to the needs of the driver, especially to the height of the driver and/or to different heights of *r": different drivers of the vehicle.
S
0 Moreover, an air suspension pedestal can be used to air-cushion in particular the seat section, which isolates the driver from vehicle motion and road variations whi'e in the sitting position. The seat section and the backrest section can be adjusted, in particular height-adjusted, by the scissor lift independent of the air suspension pedestal. Hence, the seat apparatus on the one hand allows to height-adjust the seat section and the backrest in particular in the standing position and on the other hand to cushion in particular the seat section in the sitting position. This leads to a very high comfort for the driver both in the sitting position and in the standing position.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention the seat apparatus comprises at least one guide rail, alongside of which the seat section and the backrest section are adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Thereby, the seat section and the -backrest section can be moved forward and backward over a wide range, which leads to a very easy and safe ingress and egress of the seat apparatus for the driver.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the foflowirig description of preferred embodiments as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description and the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be used not only in the respective indicated combination, but also in any other combination or taken alone, without leaving the scope of the present invention.

Fig. I shows a first lift mechanism 35 of a seat apparatus for a vehicle, e.g. for a long haul truck. As can be seen from Fig. 5, the seat apparatus comprises a seat section 38 having a seating surface 37 for supporting the buttocks of an occupant of the seat apparatus. The seat apparatus further comprises a backrest section 38 for supporting the back of the occupant, the backrest section 38 having a backrest surface 39.. The seat * apparatus also comprises a head rest for supporting the head of the occupant, the head * rest 40 being of an integral type. This means that the head rest 40 is incorporated in the backrest section 38. Moreover, an armrest 41 is a pivot connection on the backrest section 38.
* As can be seen from an overall view of Figs. 5 to 6b, the seat apparatus is adjustable between at least one sitting position, shown in Figs. 5 and 6a, and at least one standing -S.....
* position, shown in Fig. 6b. In the sitting position seating surface 37 extends substantially horizontally, whereas in the standing position the seating surface 37 extends substantially vertically. Further, in the standing position the backrest section 38 is adjusted in a higher position than in the sitting position.
In order to adjust the backrest section 38 between the sitting position and the standing position, the seat apparatus comprises the first lift mechanism 35. The first Fit mechanism comprises a single actuator 7, by means of which the backrest section 38 can be driven, i.e. by means of which the backrest section 38 can be lifted from the sitting position into the standing position and by means of which the backrest section 38 can be lowered from the standing position into the sitting position. The actuator 7 is designed as a linear actuator.
As can be seen from Figs. 1, 4 and 6a, the actuator 7 lifting the back section 38 on the one side is secured to a pedestal 42 of the seat apparatus via a seatbelt bar 34 and seatbelt bar bracket 33, where the seatbelt bar 34 is secured to the pedestal 42. The actuator 7 simply slides on during installation of the seatbelt bar 34. Spacers 8 (Fig. 1) are used to secure the actuator 7 within the seatbelt bar bracket 33 holding the seatbelt bar 34. At the opposite end, the actuator 7 is secured to a framework 43 of the backrest section 38. Therein the actuator 7 is attached to the back of the backrest section 38 through a bracket 4 attached to support geometry in the form of the framework 43 within the backrest section 38. The attachment of the actuator 7 to bracket 4 is also secured by spacers 6. Rotation and lift of the backrest section 38 are a combination of the actuator's 7 lifting force! and the back section 38 being guided by the seat section 36 through at least one hinge point between the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38.
Fig. 2 shows a second lift mechanism 44 for adjusting the seat section 36 between the sitting position and the standing position. The second lift mechanism 44 comprises two lateral actuators 17, which can lift and lower the seat section 36, and which are anchored to lateral plates 18 and lateral lever arms 14. The respective plate 18 is attached to a first proximal end of the respective actuator 17, whose distal second end is attached to the respective lever arm 14. Respective lateral plates 16 and the plates 18 are attached to the . pedestal 42. The respective lever arm 14 and a respective lever arm 15 are pivot * " connections attached to the respective plate 16. Via the lever arms 14, 15 a framework 45 * of the seat section 36 is a pivot connection attached to the pedestal 42, the framework 45 comprising a rear frame support 9, a middle frame support 10, a forward frame support ° 11 and respective lateral main members 12. For this purpose, the respective lever arms * * 14, 15 are pivot connections attached to the respective main member 12. In other words, by means of the lever aims 14, 15 the framework 45 can be rotated in relation to the pedestal 42, thus the seat section 36 can be rotated between the sitting position and the standing position. The respective lever arms 14, 15 form a respective four-joint system, by means of which the seat section 36 can be both moved vertically and rotated in relation to the pedestal 42.
The respective lever arm 14 that the actuator 17 is attached to is straight. The purpose of the lever arm 14 is merely to lift the seat section 36 vertically. Rotation of the seat section 36 is achieved through the respective second, passive lever arm 15. The ever arm 15 is curved to prevent a clash with the lifting arm 14. The lever arm 15 does not assist in the lifting process but is responsible for rotating the seat section 36 into the vertical position during lifting. When the seat section 36 is not lifted in the standing position, the lateral framework 45 that supports the seat section 36 rests on the pedestal 42. This setup allows for realizing an air-cushioned suspension of the seat apparatus by the pedestal 42, which isolates the driver from vehicle motion and road input while in the seated position.
Hence, the pedestal 42 is designed as an air suspension pedestal! which can be used to air-cushion in particular the seat section 36.
The main members 12 of the lateral framework 45 are designed as square channels, whereas the rear frame support 9, the middle frame support 10 and the forward frame support 11 are designed as respective sheetrnetal components, which are, for instance, welded or bolted to the two main members 12. The two main members 12 supporting the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 are reinforced by the rear frame support 9 which is, for instance! welded to the two main members 12. Moreover! the main members 12 are reinforced by the middle frame support 10 which is, for instance, welded to the main members 12. The middle frame support 10 comprises a hole for a further reinforcing rod if desired. The forward frame support 11 also reinforces and is, for instance, welded to the main members 12. The middle frame support comprises geometry for the framework 45 to rest on corresponding geometry of the pedestal 42 when the seat section 36 is in the sitting position. * .
* " The framework 45 is further reinforced by the rods 13 that the lever arms 14! 15 are connected to, which run through the entire framework 45. The rods 13 serve as respective axles for the lever arms 14, 15, which are pivot connections attached to the framework 45 via the rods 13. The plates 16, 18 are welded to the pedestal 42. The * actuators 17 are anchored to either threaded studs that are welded to the plates 16, 18, or to bolts going through the plates.
The larger actuator 7 works in tandem with the two smaller actuators 17 lifting the seat section 36 to provide a smooth, synchronized transition between the sitting position and the standing position. Support arms 3 of the first lifting mechanism 35 that are attached to rails 1 on the backrest sections 38 back do not assist in the lifting process, but improve strength and merely provide support, especially in the event of an impact. The support arms 3 are attached to the rails 1 through simple sliding blocks 2 which can slide alongside the rails 1 when height-adjusting the backrest section 38 between the sitting position and the standing position. The rails 1 for the support arms 3 are also attached to the inner framework 43 on the back of the backrest section 38, and include custom spacers 5 at their bottom ends to maintain contact with the back section 38. As can be seen from Fig. 4, the support arms 3 are also attached to the seatbelt bar 34, but on the outside of the seatbelt bar bracket 33.
In order to realize an advantageous height position of the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 especiafly in the standing position, the seat apparatus comprises a scissor lift 46 shown in Fig. 3. The scissor lift 46 is adjustable between a maximum retracted position shown in Figs. 5 to S and a maximum extended position shown in Figs. 9 and 10. When the seat section 36 and the back section 38 are in the standing position and when simultaneously the scissor lift 46 is in its maximal extended position, the height and the height position of the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 is adequate to provide adequate support -not only for a person of average height -in the event of a crash or impact. The scissor lift 46 allows for raising the entire assembly comprising at least the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 from to a more appropriate height.
This can be combined with the seat apparatus' ability to slide forward and backward, and with the pedestal's 42 air suspension, to provide even more height adjustability.
The scissor lift 46 comprises two levels of C-channels 20, 26, the C-channels 20 being height-adjustable in relation to the C-channels 26 by means of two lateral scissor arms 47. The respective scissor arm 47 comprises two individual arms 22, 24 each. The ". : respective arms 22, 24 are arranged crosswise to one another. The movement S the arms 22, 24 in relation to each other is controlled by respective linear actuators 27 attached within the lower level C-channels 26. The lateral scissor arms 47 are connected through a bisecting support rod 25 and are welded to respective axles 21 that are captive * within the C-channels 20, 26. The support rod 25 provides synchronization between the S..... . * . two scissor arms 47 durrng the lifting process. These axles 21 help provide an adequate rigidfty of the scissor lift 46, can slide within the respective C-channels 20 and are capped by bearings 23 to decrease friction and resistance. A fourth axle 28 which the scissor arms 47 are pivot connections attached to is held solid in the C-channel 26 by bolts 30 and acts as an anchor for the actuators 27 and for the scissor arms 47. Further, the axle 28 provides rigidity to the scissor lift 46.
The respective actuator 27 on the one side is attached to the lower level axle 21 which is attached to the lower level C-channel 26 and which can slide within and alongside the lower level C-channel 26. On the other side the respective actuator 27 is attached to the fourth axle 28. The respective arm 22 on the one side is a pivot connection attached to a first one of the top level axles 21 which can slide within and alongside the respective top level C-Channel 20 via the respective bearing 23. On the other side the respective arm 22 is a pivot connection attached to the fourth axle 28. The respective arm 24 on the one side is a pivot connection attached to the second one of the top level axles 21 which can also slide within and alongside the respective top level C-Channel 20 via the respective bearing 23. On the other side the respective arm 24 is pivot connection attached to the lower level axle 21 which can slide within and alongside the lower level C-channel 26.
The pedestal 42 is attached to the respective top level C-channel 20 by means of standard bolts 19. The respective lower level C-Channel 26 is attached to a rack-and- pinion system 48 comprising four pinions 31 which are attached to axles 29 of the rack- and-pinion system 48, the axles 29 running entirely through the respective lower C-channel 26. The rack-and-pinion system 48 also comprises racks 32. The axles 29 also provide rigidity to the scissor lift 46.
In the upright position, the assembly comprising the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 would occupy the space where the driver would be standing once he or she * ** has been lifted up by the seat apparatus. To access this space for the driver, the assembly in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle can slide backwards when it is in its lifted form, i.e. in the standing position. This is accomplished by setting the assembly on ". : the rack-and-pinion system 48, which will allow the assembly to slide forwards and * n backwards while transitioning between the sitting position and the standing position. The rack-and-pinion system 48 can also allow for more forward/backward adjustability for the driver when seated in the seat apparatus in its sitting position. The racks 32 that the said assembly will slide in will be closed on five sides to provide protection for the pinions 31.
The respective outer side is shown open in Fig. 3 to show clarity of the mechanics.
Hence, the racks 32 serve as guide rails of the seat apparatus, along such guide rails the seat section 36 and the backrest section 38 can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
The seat apparatus can also comprise miscellaneous washers and fasteners which are not shown and which are used to secure respective components. The washers are advantageously made of nylon to keep friction to a minimum. For example, components of the seat apparatus which may be secured by fasteners might be the rails 1 secured to the framework 43 at the back of the backrest section 38, the sliding blocks 2 secured to the arms 3, the bracket 4 secured to the framework 43 the seatbelt bar 34 secured to the seatbelt bar bracket 33, the lever arms 14, 15 secured to the plates 16, to the actuators 17 and to the framework 45, the actuators 17 secured to the plates 18, the pinions 31 secured to the axles 29 and the racks 32 secured to a floor of the vehicle.
All of the three said functions -lifting the seat section 36 and the back section 38, extending the scissor lift 46 and sliding the said assembly backward -preferably happen simultaneously, as they are all congruent to a fluid transition between the sitting position and the standing position. The seat apparatus is activated and/or controlled for example via a button-pad, which can also be configured to control the pedestal's 42 level of pneumatic suspension. It will be placed, in particular on the seat apparatus, in a location so as to be easily reachable by both the sitting and standing driver.
It can be seen that the seat apparatus comprises at least three different groups of actuators. A first one of these groups comprises the actuator 7 and the actuators 17 and serves for lifting the said assembly in the vertical standing position. A second one of these groups comprises the actuators 27 and serves for operating the scissor lift 46 in order to height-adjust, in particular to raise, the said assembly. The third group comprises the rack-and-pinion system 48 and serves for adjusting the whole assembly in the longitudinal :* direction of the vehicle, thus to move the assembly out of the driver's way. Thereby a * particularly easy and comfortable operability and adjustability of the seat apparatus is * realized. The actuators 7, 17, 27 are designed as linear actuators and can particularly be designed as pneumatic or hydraulic actuators: -.
