Abstract

A 'shopping trolley toy attachment' includes a connecting device in the form of a rigid strut 1 supported by fastenings 2, which may be releasable clipping mechanisms for attaching and detaching the connecting device to the handle of a shopping trolley. The connecting device contains a releasable fastening which may be a threaded knob 6, for attaching a toy to the device. The connecting device includes a means of adjusting the height and angle of the attached toy which may be provided by threaded knobs 5. The attachment device allows a toy to be positioned at a suitable position, enabling easy visibility of the toy and making it within reach for play.

Description

bESCRIPTtQN Toy Attachment This invention relates to a connecting device for attaching a toy to a shopping trolley.
When parents or guardians with young children/toddlers, shop in a supermarket, they often need to take their young children along with them.
This can mean that the adult is distracted from shopping by attending to the needs of a bored or unhappy child. The adult has to push the trolley, collect shopping and at the same time try and provide the child with toys or other means to keep them happy. Most adults may provide some distraction in the way of a small toy, or edible treat to help keep the child occupied and thus enable the parent/guardian to shop, but these can easily be dropped on the floor or thrown away by the child and might only produce a temporary distraction. The adult may be further burdened by having to supply and carry a variety of objects with which to keep a child happy. This advanced preparation and practice in itself can cause more distress and distraction to the shopper making the task of shopping more ineffective.
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a connecting device' which can attach a child's toy (a) to a shopping trolley (b) (which are already in existence), in a novel and inventive manner.
The connecting device is intended to enable a range of engaging and substantial toys to be fixed to the shopping trolley.
Preferably, the connecting device will have means of easy attachment and detachment to the trolley and to the toy by an adult but not by the child.
The connecting device will preferably be attached to either side of the trolley handle and in front of the child, enabling easy visibility of the toy and making it within easy reach for play.
Preferably, the connecting device will have means of adjustment enabling the toy to be tilted to a comfortable angle and height for the child to reach.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a connecting device according to the invention A V shaped cross member us supported either side by releasable fastenings 2 which are fitted with steel inserts 4 providing the flex needed to fasten the connecting device securely to the shopping trolley handlebars. A silicone insert 3 stops the connecting device from slipping. A range of toys can be attached to the cross member via the threaded knob 6. Knobs at the side of the connecting device 5 can be loosened to tilt the device to suit the height of the child, and then tightened to keep it in place.
There are four elements to the invention -the holding device itself, the means for attaching the device to the shopping trolley, the means for attaching a toy to the device, and the means for adjusting the position of the toy to place it within easy reach of the child.
Attaching the device to the shoDDina trolley. The example above shows two retaining clips with levers to open the clip, steel reinforcing inserts for strength and silicone inserts to prevent slipping. Another solution may be a permanent attachment mechanism such as a bracket secured with a screw.
A further possibility is to include additional bars to attach to the sides of the trolley lower down to increase stability.
Attachinci a toy to the device. The example above shows a threaded knob attached to the device, to which a toy can be attached. Alternative attaching mechanisms could be a slotted holder and bracket arrangement, or a closed hook -depending on the sort and shape of toy to be attached.
Adjustments. The example above shows two knobs at either side of the device which can be loosened to allow the device to be rotated in the joint and then tightened to hold the device at the desired angle. Alternatively the joint could be a square bracket with arms attached to the device to allow the device to be raised to the desired height. Another possibility is that the arms of the device could include an extendable section so that the length can be adjusted to bring the toy closer to the child.
