Abstract

A fire containment mechanism for a downlighter 3 comprises a steel plate 1 which has a larger footprint than an opening which is adapted to receive the downlighter in an installed state. The plate 1 engages a portion of the body of the downlighter 3 that is received by the opening in the installed state.

Description

Fire containment mechanism The present disclosure relates to a fire containment mechanism. More particularly, it relates to a fire containment mechanism for a downlighter.
Downlighters have become increasingly popular in recent years as a means for lighting both domestic and commercial properties. Such downlighters are frequently found mounted in openings/recesses in ceilings. Since an opening in a ceiling must be provided for mounting a downlighter therein, there can be a problem with the spread of fire. A common solution to the problem is to provide downlighters with a gasket of intumescent material, which expands when it is heated to close off any path through the opening and thereby block the passage of fire through the opening.
This is an adequate solution when the downlighters comprise hoods/bezels that are formed from a high melting point material, such as steel. However, it is desirable to provide downlighters with bezels formed from lower melting point materials, such as aluminium, to provide a desired aesthetic. Here the intumescent materials are not useful, since the downlighter bezel can melt causing the downlighter to drop through the opening in the ceiling and leaving a large opening that the intumescent material cannot fill.
The present invention arose in a bid to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention in a first aspect, there is provided a fire containment mechanism for a downlighter comprising a plate which has a larger footprint than an opening which is adapted to receive the downlighter in an installed state, wherein the plate is arranged to engage a portion of the body of the downlighter that is received by the opening in the installed state.
Since the plate engages a portion of the body of the downlighter that is received by the opening in the installed state, the plate is fully received by the opening in the installed state. Should the bezel of the downlighter, which engages the opening melt during a fire then the downlighter will drop down through the opening. However, the opening will be blocked by the plate, which will engage the rear of the surface in which the opening is provided, by virtue of its larger footprint than the opening. The plate will thereby block the opening and prevent the passage of fire therethrough.
The present invention provides a unique and highly cost effective solution.
Further, preferred features, are provided in the dependent claims.
Non-limiting embodiments will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure la shows a plate in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention in plan view; Figure lb shows the plate of Figure la in side view; Figure lc shows the plate of Figure la in end view; Figure 2a shows the installation of the plate of Figure la to a downlighter in plan view; Figure 2b shows the installation of the plate of Figure la to a downlighter in end view; Figure 3a shows the plate of Figure la in an installed state in plan view; and Figure 3b shows the plate of Figure la in an installed state in perspective view.
With reference to the figures, there is shown a fire containment mechanism for a downlighter according to the present invention in a first embodiment.
The fire containment mechanism comprises a plate 1. The plate is substantially planar and is substantially oval. It should be appreciated that the plate needs not be oval but may take other forms.
The plate is provided with a slot 2, which allows for engagement of the plate with a downlighter 3. The shape of the slot may be adapted as necessary to suit the downlighter to which it is attached. The plate is of unitary construction and is formed from a high melting point material. The plate is preferably formed from steel.
The plate is arranged to be engaged with a downlighter by engaging the downlighter with the slot. The plate is additionally arranged to be bent out of plane along a longitudinal centerline, as seen is Figures lb and It.
Installation of the plate with a downlighter is shown in Figures 2a and 2b. The downlighter with which the plate is adapted to be used is provided with a heatsink that forms part of the body of the downlighter. The heatsink comprises a plurality of spaced parallel fins 4. The fins are joined by a central ribS. The slot of the plate receives the central rib of the heatsink in an installed state. The plate is received between a pair of adjacent fins, as seen clearly in Figures 2b and 3b. With the plate bent out of plane as shown, such that it has a substantial V-shape in end view, the plate is wedged between a pair of adjacent fins with an interference fit. No further fixing means are required.
The plate, as discussed, has a greater footprint than an opening in which the downlighter is installed. In the installed state as shown in Figure 3b, a bezel of the downlighter 6, which is made of a lower melting point material than the plate, engages a surface in which the downlighter is installed (such as a ceiling). The plate lies within the opening, at a level above the surface engaged by the bezel, and substantially parallel to the surface. In the event of a fire and the melting of the bezel, the downlighter drops down through the opening in the surface. The plate, by virtue of its larger footprint, will not pass through the opening. The plate thus blocks the opening and prevents the passage of fire through the opening.
