Abstract

A child transportation device which is a child car seat, a stroller and a child carry chair. The transporter provides a stroller with wheels 4 which can retract into cavities 7 and a first handle 6 for pushing the stroller along and which can fold away against or into the body of the transporter (8, Figure 2). When the wheels 4 and first handle 6 are retracted a second handle (10, Figure 3) may be extended to facilitate use as a carry chair. The handles 6, (10) may be telescopic and the wheels 4 may be mounted on wheel carrier assemblies 2. The wheels 4 may be deployed when a handle 6 is moved into the in use position via linkages (Figure 5) and there may be a wheel carrier 2 release button. The child transportation device may have between two and five wheels 4 which may be removable.

Description

COMBINED CHILD CAR SEAT, STROLLER AND CARRY CHAIR The present invention combines the features of a child car seat with those of a stroller by providing a car seat with fully retractable wheels and a fully retractable handle for pushing the stroller along. The invention also serves as a carry chair having a retractable or a pivoted handle which will extend from the body when required for carrying the chair.
Currently child safety car seats for babies and small children are required by law to be fitted for use by all children being conveyed in a motor vehicle. These child safety car seats are designed to protect a child from various side frontal and rear impacts which can occur when a vehicle is involved in an accident.
They are also designed to restrain a child within the vehicle to prevent the inevitable distractions to the driver which can occur when a small child is free to move about a vehicle.
However babies and small children typically require other items of equipment when taken on an outing. When a baby or small child is travelling by car, upon arrival at the destination, it is normal practise to then place the baby or small child in a stroller or carry chair for further transportation. To accomplish this, the baby must be lifted from the car seat and placed into the stroller, carry chair or other similar child transportation device. If the child has fallen asleep in the car seat, movement from the car seat into the stroller frequently results in waking the child with the accompanying problems known well to any parent.
Conversely, with the normal car seat carry chair and/or separate stroller arrangement if the baby has fallen asleep in the chair or stroller and it comes time to place the baby in its car seat, the baby will be disturbed.
All of this usually means that the average family faces having to carry a car seat, a carry chair and a stroller for each small child. This is particularly troublesome for families with two or more small children because the size of the average car is continuously decreasing and the storage space in modern vehicles which are becoming smaller is getting less. This is made much worse when the average family must also transport luggage in the car. A need to carry both a car seat, a stroller and also possibly a carry chair on such journeys is burdensome and may be difficult in small cars.
An additional problem is the time and effort required to transfer a child from the car seat to the stroller and vice versa. This is particularly cumbersome for example where the weather is bad, where the child is sleeping or where a number of frequent stops must be made.
Also there are many situations where a child seat is required but not provided for example in taxis and in aeroplanes.
A number of solutions to these problems can be found in the art, they are too numerous to list here but can usually be found in European Classification category B60N2.
There are two main groups of these solutions.
Firstly and particularly for babies some car seats are designed as two part devices where a base can be left in the vehicle and the part in which the baby is carried can be removed from the base and carried via a built in handle.
However, carrying a baby seated in a car seat can be difficult for some people, particularly grandparents, or people with back problems or other ailments. Also these devices are not suitable even for normal fit people who want to carry the child for any long distance nor are they suitable for children once past the baby stage.
The second group of solutions is one in which the present invention belongs and relates to child seats which convert into strollers and are therefore dual purpose devices. In these devices the child can remain in the seat, the whole device is removed from the vehicle, wheels are either permanently in position or are brought into position and the device becomes a stroller.
These devices have many advantages such as saving space, saving time and trouble in that the child remains seated and strapped in, also saving money because the slightly increased cost of production is offset by the saving from not having to purchase a stroller.
However some dual purpose devices come with some inherent problems.
Those with fixed wheels carry all sorts of dirt and water into the vehicle particularly on their wheels. Those with retractable wheels can be very difficult to operate, some have to be held above the ground whilst a mechanism is operated. Some with retractable wheels still convey dirt into the vehicle since the wheels simply draw back into an open cavity. Also most of these products are unattractive have difficult protrusions and do not attract purchasers.
The object of the present invention is firstly to provide a multi-purpose car seat, carry chair and stroller which is attractive, which has retractable wheels which fold away into their own cavity which is easy to operate by moving just one lever. Second to provide a child carry seat combined with the features of a car seat and stroller.
According to the invention there is provided a child transporter which is a combined car seat carry chair and stroller which has wheels which retract into a cavity within the body of the child transporter. None of the component parts are separable from each other.
One or Two handles may be provided a first one to operate the wheel release and to push the transporter along and a second to carry the transporter as a child seat. One handle may fuifil both functions. The said carry handle or handles may be telescopic extending from the top of the transporter or pivoted from the sides or back of the transporter. The handles may lock in the closed or open or both positions with suitable releasing means.
The said wheels are mounted on a wheel carrier assembly and when in use extend either sideways or downwards from cavities within the body of the child transporter.
When the wheels extend sideways they extend from cavities in the sides of the assembly and may have covers for the said cavities; which normally form part of the outer shell of the transporter; form part of the extendable wheel carrier assembly. When in use as a stroller the extended wheel carriers add to the overall width of the stroller. The wheel carriers each may contain one or two wheels.
When the wheels extend downwards they may also extend from covered cavities however these cavities would now be located on the underside of the main body of the transporter. The said cavities may have a cover which opens manually or automatically.
Activation of the wheel carrier assemblies, (that is the extension and retraction of these carriers) is controlled by a handle which when in use also extends from the body otherwise known as the outer shell of the transporter and when not in use is folded into a cavity in the body of the transporter. The contours of the handle follow the contours of the main body of the transporter.
There are further embodiments where other means which are additional to and not part of the handle mechanism may be used to operate the wheel carriers.
Also the wheels may be released by means of a release button or other suitable means instead of the fold away handle previously described.
When in use as a stroller a central mechanism within the transporter body supports the wheel carriers and a suspension arm or arms extends from this mechanism either out through cavities in the side of the body, or, in the case of downward extending wheels, from underneath the body. Operation of this mechanism is much the same as with an aircraft undercarriage and the mechanism locks into place when extended.
The operating handle for the wheel carriers, which is also used to push the transporter along, is pivoted from the top of the rear of the body and in use extends upwards from the body. The handle is shaped in a curve to match the profile of the body of the transporter so that it folds away fitting flush with the surface of the rear of the stroller's body.
The position of the seat within the body is such that in a four or three wheel embodiment the weight is distributed evenly over the forward and rearward wheel or wheels. This allows the user to place any load on to the seat without disturbing the balance of the stroller and therefore the stroller remains upright even when the handle is not being held.
The number of wheels may vary from a minimum of two to a maximum of five there being an embodiment in which a third further wheel extends on an arm from the transporter preferably but not exclusively to the front of the transporter.
Also wheels may be removable so that different wheels may be fitted to suit different terrains.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which -Figure 1 Shows a frontal view of the transporter with the wheel carriers extended. The cavities which house the wheel carriers can also be seen.
Figure 2 Is a rear view showing the pivoted curved handle and the handle cavity. The wheel carriers are also shown extended.
Figure 3 Shows a rear view of the transporter with the wheels retracted and a telescopic version of the carry handle extended.
Figure 4 Is a side view showing extended wheels which drop down from underneath.
Figure 5 Is a view of the wheel carrier assembly for an embodiment where the wheels extend from the side of the sheil. Each side is shown with one wheel though there may also be two and a third wheel is shown which may or may not be included.
Turning now to figure 1, the main body 1 (also known as the shell 1), is equipped with a child seat 3 an operating handle 6 and wheel cavities or housings 7.
Covers 2 for the side cavities also form part of the wheel carrier assembly of which the suspension arm 5a is visible and 5b the right hand arm cannot be seen.
The wheel carrier assembly carries the wheels 4a and b which are mounted at the end of their respective suspension arms 5a and 5b. Wheels 4c and d for the right hand side and 4a for the left hand side are visible. In this embodiment, four wheels are shown though there may only be two, one for each side and an optional third wheel to the front or rear which may or may not be retractable.
This third wheel can be seen as 11 in Figure 5.
In use a first handle 6 is pulled upwards and this extends the wheel carrier assemblies 2 which are connected to the main body by suspension arms 5.
Figure 2 shows a rear view and the suspension arm cavity 7a can be seen. In use the first handle 6, is gripped by a grip portion 9 and pulled upwards. This action extends the wheel carriers 2. The said handle 6 also serves to be the handle by which the stroller is pushed along and may be telescopic in some embodiments. It may also be dual purpose serving also as a carry handle In a further embodiment shown in Figure 3 a second 10 is provided for the purpose of carrying the transporter. This may or may not be a retractable handle. In this embodiment it is shown as a pivoted handle at the side of the shell so that it swings forward or rearwards into and out of use, but in other embodiments, not shown, this handle may be a retractable handle which may be telescopic. In other embodiments it may be a fixed handle.
Figure 5 shows a typical wheel carrier assembly for operating side retractable wheels. Suspension arms 5a and b are seen retracted. Operation of handle 6 by pulling it upwards drives down push rods 13 a and b which in turn drives the suspension arms 5a and b outwards. The wheel carriers 2 are not shown and the rear wheels 4b and 4d are missing because this is a two wheeled suspension system. There is an optional third wheel 11, which may or may not
be retractable.
