Detailed Description of the Drawings
As used herein, the terms "flavour", "flavourant", "fragrance" and the like refer to materials which, where local laws and regulations permit, may he used to create a desired taste or aroma in a product.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a flip top cigarette pack 10. Figure 2 shows a wrapper 15 for wrapping the cigarette pack 10. Although the wrapper 15, when formed, would surround the pack 10 shown in Figure 1, they are shown in separate figures for case of illustration and understanding. The wrapper 15 shown in Figure 2 comprises a tear strip 20 which extends across a front face 21, a tirst side face 25, rear face (not shown) and second side face (not shown) of the pack 10 shown in Figure 1. In this embodiment, the tear strip 20 comprises a pull tab 30 located where the front face 21 of the pack 10 abuts the first side face 25 of the pack 10.
The wmpper 15 may be made from hi-oriented polypropylene and the tear strip 20 may he formed from mono-oriented polypropylene. However, other suitable materials, apparent to those skilled in die art, may he used instead.
The pull tab 30 provides a protrusion from the rest of the wrapper 15 which may he gripped by a user. The tear strip 20 may then he pulled across the surface of the wrapper thereby separating an upper portion 35 of the wrapper iS from a lower portion 40 of the wrapper 15. The upper portion 35 may then he removed by the user and the lid 45 of the pack 10 opened to allow access to cigarettes stored therein. The lower portion 40 may also he removed by the user aithough it can he retained on the pack 10 where it provides an additional layer of lotection to the contents of the pack 10.
Printed on the inner surface of the wrapper 15 is a layer of capsules 50. The capsules 50 contain a fragrance imparting substance such as menthol although other fragrance imparting substances may he used.
In preferred embodiments of the present invention the capsules 30 are microcapsules.
Hovever, other types of fragrance containing capsules apparent to those skilled in the art may he used.
In sonic embodiments, cigarettes within the pack may he flavoured and/or provided with flavourants, and the fragrance contained within the capsules 50 may be chosen to match and/or complement the flavourant of the cigarettes contained insidc the pack 10, whilst in alternative embodiments other types of scent maybe employed. Alternatively, a tobacco fragrance may he applied to the wrapper 15.
In some embodiments, the layer of capsules 50 is centred about the tear strip 20 of the wrapper 15, as shown in Figure 2. The tear strip 20 may he removed by pulling on the tah 30. As the upper region 33 of the wrapper 15 is renuwed fragrance honi the capsules 50 is released due to the frictional contact between the inner surface of the wrapper 15 and the outer surface of the pack 10 causing the rupture of capsules 50. Capsules 50 located on the lower portion 40 of the wrapper 13 may he ruptured, causing the release of fragrance, if the lower portion 40 is removed or due to repeated handling causing frictional contact if the lower portion 40 is retained.
Figure 3 shows a pack 10 wrapped by a wrapper 15 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. The layer of capsules 50 is located above the tear strip 20 of the wrapper 15. The tear strip 20 may he renu)ved by pulling on the tab 30. As the upper region 35 of the wrapper 15 is removed fragrance from the capsules 50 is released due to the frictional contact between the inner surface of the wrapper iS arid the outer surface of the pack tO causing the rupture of capsules 50.
Figure 4 shows a pack 10 wrapped by a wrapper 15 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. In this case, the layer of capsules 50 is located below the teat strip 20 of the wrapper 15. In this embodiment, capsules 50 are deposited as the lower portion 40 of the wrapper 15 is removed. Alternatively, if a user decides not to remove the lower portion 40 of the wrapper 15 from the pack 10 then fragrance from the capsules 50 will be repeatedly released as the user handles the pack 10 due to frictional contact between the inner surface of the wrapper 15 and the outer surface of the pack 10.
The width of the layer of capsules 50 may be between I and 100 millimetres (mm), preferably between 20 and 50mm or, even more preferably, the layer of capsules 50 may he 30 mm in width although other widths may he employed.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment in which a feed apparatus 60 conveys a sheet of plastics material 65 for fomiing the wrapper 15 (e.g. shown in Figures 2, 3 and/or 4 along a path P. A ribbon 75 may he attached to the sheet of plastics material 65.A roll 77 of ribbon 75, a pressing roller 78 and an ultrasonic welding unit 79 may he used to apply the ribbon 75 to the sheet of plastics material 65. Tn use, the ribbon 75 may be unwound from the roll 77 and pressed against the sheet of plastics material 65 by the pressing roller 78. The ultrasonic welding unit 79 ihrates at an ultrasonic frequency causing the sheet of plastics material 65 and the ribbon 75 to melt slightly in the vicinity of the welding unit 79 so that the ribbon 75 may be more readily afed to the sheet of plastics material 65. The ribbon forms the tear strip 20 (as shown in Figures 2, 3 and/or 4) once the plastics material has been cut to size and wrapped around a smoking article container 10 to form the wrapper 15.
Referring again to Figure 5, in some implementations, further along the path P. downstream of the ultrasonic welding unit 79 is a rotogravure printer 85 which prints a layer of capsules 50 onto the surface of the sheet of plastics material 65 which will form the inner surface of the wrapper 15. The capsules 50 may be encapsulated in any other suitable way known in the art. The rotogravure printer 85 comprises print rollers 86 and an ink source (not shown). In this embodiment, the capsules 50 form part of an ink-like composition.
Suitabl.e capsules for use in embodiments of the present invention include niicrocapsules available from Microtek Laboratories Inc. of Dayton, Ohio, USA and Ceilescence.
While a rotogravure printer 85 is shown in Figure 3, it should he understood that alternative printing processes may he used instead. Suitable printing processes include intaglio printing or any other suitahk ink application process that will he apparent to those skilled in the art. The position of such printers may he adjusted transversely to the path P, across the plastics material 65, so that the layer of capsules 30 may he located at different regions on the finished wrapper 15. For examp'e, it may he desirable to centre the byer of capsules 30 around the tear strip 20 as shown in Figure 2. Aliernatively, the layer of capsules 30 may be located above or below the tear strip 20 as shown in Figures 3 and 4 respectively. Printing cyhnders of differing widths may he substituted for one another so that the width of the layer of capsules 50 maybe adjusted.
Although not shown in Figure 5, in alternative embodiments of the preseit invention drying means are situated downstream of the rotogravure prtiiter 83. Drying the layer of capsules 50 reduces leaching or smudging of the layer of capsules 30 when the plastics layer is conveyed further downstream. Suitable drying means include an air dryer or any other drying means that will he apparent to those skilled in the art.
As can he seen in Figure 3, the hryer of capsules 50 and ribbon 75 are applied substantially parailtil to the path P along which the sheet of plastics material 65 is conveyed. This configuration is advantageous since the level of registration or alignment of the hiyer of capsules 50 and ribbon 73 with the sheet of plastic wrapping material 65 can be simplified thus facilitating manufacturing processes.
Tn some embodiments, downstream of the rotogravure printer 85 are cylindrical guide rollers 87 situated above 87a arid below 871) the wrapper ES. The guide roller 87a situated above the wrapper 15 (corresponding to the side of the plastics material which will fonu the itiner surface of the wrapper IS) has a narrow, pinc:hed portioii aligned with the layer of capsules 50 which does not come into contact with the layer of capsules 50. Thus, damage to the capsules 50 prior to wrapping may be mitigated.
In some embodiments, downstream of the cylindrical guide rollers 87 is a notch cutter 90 operable to cut a notch 91 in the sheet of plastics material 65. The notch cutter 90 may be supported by 21 support roller 92. The notch 91 in the plastics material 65 wIll torm the pull tab 30 of the finished wrapper 15 shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4.
In some embodiments, downstream of the notch cutter 90 is a pair of rollers 95 with blades 96 attached thereto. The blades 96 cut the sheet of plastics material 65 into individual wrappers 15 for packs 10, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. The wrapper is may then he wrapped around a pack 10 or other smoking article container in a manner known in the art.
The apparatus shown in Figure 5 may he modified to remove the rotogravure printer 85.
In this alternative embodiment the plastics material 65 may have the layer of capsules 50 applied thereto before the plastics material 65 is conveyed to the feed apparatus 60 shown in Figure 5.
The foregoing description describes various embodiments of the present invention.
Modifications to the described embodiments may he made without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined by the claims listed hereinafter.
