Abstract

An electrical distribution system, particularly for use with renewable energy sources, includes on-site energy storage means for subsequent supply to a number of loads on site. The system comprises a supply subsystem 10 connected to a building having a distribution sub-system including lighting circuits 42 and power circuits 40. The supply subsystem includes means for generating power from renewable sources and a central battery for storing energy from the renewable sources. The distribution subsystem includes modules 30, 31 connected to power sockets 41 or the lighting circuits, where each module includes a control board and a battery, such that the loads can be powered either from the module battery or the central battery. A management subsystem monitors the amount of charge in the central battery and the module batteries and controls the connection of the loads and the charging of the batteries accordingly. A mains electricity connection and a auxiliary generator (e.g. diesel generator) may be provided at the supply subsystem. A water supply subsystem may also be provided.
