Abstract

A cabinet jig comprises template holes at set dimensions for allowing precise positioning of concealed hinges and concealed hinge back plates, slow closers, keku fittings, cam dowels and cam dowel locks, wooden dowels and shelf support pins. The jig may be made of shock resistant plastics material or aluminium. Notches 5.1 or the ends (1.1, Fig 1) of the jig may be used to accurately position the jig. The jig allows standard sized cabinets to be drilled for the attachment of components without the need for a measuring tape.

Description

Cabinet Jig When building or assembling standard sized DLY cabinets most components such as hinges, catches, slow closers, cams and dowels etc are already pre-drilled as a standard, but as most householders realise a standard set of cabinets rarely fits a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom perfectly. Consequently non standard or modified units have to be made to cope with these differences. As this can only be done by a considerable amount of measuring and marking out for all the new positions of all the fittings, mistakes and errors can often occur causing frustration and the additional expense of new panelling and or materials as well as adding time to the job.
As a means of reducing the possibility of human error caused by the use of measuring tapes in the creation of bespoke cabinets, the invention will be a pre-drilled, right angled template/jig. Each pre-drilled hole/set of holes on both the main body and the returned edge will individually correspond with a specific cabinet fitting, as laid out in figures 1-9. As well as these "jig" holes there will be a series of "datum vees" strategically located around the profile and "datum edges/tabs" incorporated into the design for its precision location to the unit or work piece. These "jig" holes and designated datum's incorporated into the template/jig will allow for the marking and installation of all of the most common European fittings included in today's cabinet designs.
Examples of the full capabilities, features and unique design characteristics of the invention will now be described in more detail using the following drawings as reference Figure 1. Shows the template being used to position and locate the holes for a concealed hinge.

The specific design of the invention will allow the repetitive fitting of hinges, catches and dowels etc to be uniform and symmetrical across the range of cabinets ensuring the cabinet carcases and doors fit together perfectly and making the finished units look professionally constructed at a more acceptable cost and reduced timescale. The cabinet template/jig would be made of either a tough, shock resistant plastic or of a light but strong metal such as aluminium.
In figure 1 (stage Ia) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the door ready to "mark out" the counter bore hole position for the concealed hinge at the top of the door. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage ib) against the set datum tab 1.1 the hinge will always be placed in the same position relative to the door (stage I c). The two screw holes are then marked out relative to the hinge using the hinge as a template. This action is then repeated at the bottom of the door for the bottom hinge.
In figure 2 (stage 2a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase ready to "mark out" the hole positions for the concealed hinge back plate at the top of the cabinet. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 2b) against the set datum tab 2.1 the hinge will always be placed in the same position relative to the door (stage 2c). This action is then repeated at the bottom of the carcase for the bottom hinge back plate. This pair of holes in the jig also matches those used by standard slow closer mechanisms and would be used in exactly the same way (stage 2d).
In figure 3 (stage 3a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the back of the "blanking panel" ready to "mark out" the hole positions for the Keku fining at one end. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 3b) against the set datum tab 3.1 the Keku fitting will always be placed in the same position relative to the door (stage Sc). This action is then repeated at the opposite end of the blanking panel.
In figure 4 (stage 4a) the cabinet jig is shown inside the carcase unit in position ready to "mark out" the hole positions for the corresponding Keku fitting on one side. By holding the cabinet jig as shown in the upper most corner position (stage 4b) against the set datum edge 4.1 the Keku fitting will always be placed in the same position relative to the blanking panel (stage 4c). This action is then repeated on the opposite side of the carcase draw cavity.
In figure 5 (stage 5a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase panel ready to "mark out" the hole position for the cam dowel. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage Sb) against the set datum vee 5.1 the cam dowel will always be placed in the same position relative to the end of the panel (stage 5c). This action is then repeated at the opposite end of the carcase panel.
In figure 6 (stage 6a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase panel ready to "mark out" the hole position for the cam dowel lock and through hole. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 6b) against the set datum vee 6.1 the cam dowel lock will always be placed in the same position relative to the edge of the panel (stage 6c). This action is then repeated at the opposite end of the carcase panel.
In figure? (stage 7a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase panel ready to "mark out" the hole positions for the wooden dowels. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 7b) against the set datum vee 7.1 the cam dowel will always be placed in the same position relative to the end of the panel (stage 7c). This action is then repeated at the opposite end of the carcase panel and at any other point as required using a manual datum.
In figure 8 (stage 8a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase panel ready to "mark out" the hole positions for the wooden dowels. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 8b) against the set datum vee 8.1 the cam dowel will always be placed in the same position relative to the edge of the panel (stage 8c). This action is then repeated at the opposite end of the carcase panel and at any other point as required using a manual datum.
In figure 9 (stage 9a) the cabinet jig is shown in position over the carcase ready to "mark out" the hole position for the front shelf support pin within the assembled cabinet. By holding the cabinet jig in the position shown (stage 9b) to a pre-determined datum height all four pins will always be placed in the same position relative to each other (stage 9c). This action is then repeated towards the back of the unit by reversing the jig and holding it at the pre-determined height and then on the opposite side. The strategically designed right angled fold acts as a datum and location device which allows the template to be placed exactly where required, each and every time.
