Abstract
249,177. Berryman, T. J. Nov. 17, 1924. Type-printing telegraphs.-To enable sequences of received Morse code and like signals comprising varying numbers of impulses of different kinds to be translated for type-printing purposes or for selecting any one of a number of circuits, means operable by every impulse and other means operable by impulses of one kind only are provided, the whole co-operating with a mechanical device movable differently both in respect of the kind of impulse received and of the order in which the impulses are received. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show a type-printing receiver operable by Morse dots and dashes distinguished by the duration of the impulse. Every received impulse energizes a magnet 1 thus rocking an armature lever 3 to operate detent pins 9, 15 controlling a compound escapement wheel 11, 17. This wheel is thus rotated one step and, through a crank 19 and connecting rod 20 imparts axial movement to a shaft 22 carrying the translating cylinder 31. An extension 24, Fig. 3, of the armature lever moves a member 27 to close at 28 a circuit enabling the energization by the received impulse of a magnet 23 which, however, is slow-acting and attracts its armature 29 only when the impulse is a dash. The attraction of this armature causes an extension 46 to bear on the member 27 to maintain the contact at 28, and thereafter causes a catch 44 to engage a member 45 to open at 43 the circuit of the magnet 1. As the armature lever returns, the extension 24 trips the catch 44 and, on closure of the circuit at 43, the magnet 1 is again energized to impart a .further axial movement to the shaft 22. The energization of the magnet 23 effects the operation of pins 25, 26 similarly to the operation of the pins 9, 15 by the magnet 1, and these pins co-operate with channels in the cylinder 31 to determine the direction and extent of rotation of this cylinder and of a type drum 40 on the same shaft 22 when this shaft is moved axially. The channels on the cylinder 31 may be replaced by angle members co-operating with a single pin, or by ribs engaged by grooved wheels to effect the rotation, or the cylinder may be provided with .axially-extending ribs co-operating with pins such as 25, 26 to release it for positive rotation through gearing from a driving shaft. The desired character is thus brought to printing position, the printing hammer is actuated, and a rock-shaft 50 is operated, e.g. by the printing hammer, to restore the shaft 22 to its initial position. An arm 53 on the shaft 50 withdraws both pins 25, 26 from the channels of the cylinder 31, a second arm 54 resets the escapement mechanism to return the shaft 22 axially, and a pin carried by the cylinder 31 co-operates with guides to return the shaft rotarily. Electric selectors.-Fig. 12 shows apparatus for effecting the closure of any one of a number of circuits in accordance with the positioning of the shaft 22. A pinion 80, fixed to the shaft, meshes with a rack 81 provided with an extension 86 carrying a button 87. The rack slides in a frame 82 carried by a non-rotatable bearing 83 for the shaft, and is thus movable axially with the shaft, enabling the button 87 to select the desired one of a number of contacts 89. Figs. 13 and 14 show means for closing the circuit at the contact so selected. In the arrangement of F'ig. 13, the extension 86 is made flexible and bears against a sliding frame 95 adapted to be operated by the energization of a magnet 93. The frame thus moves the button 87 to close the circuit at contacts 90 carried by a table 91 by the operation of a sliding pin 9 A notch 97 on this pin is engaged by a spring catch 96 to hold the circuit closed until the catch is released, e.g. by the restoring mechanism. In the arrangement of Fig. 14, the contacts are mounted on a spheroidal table 106, and the button 87 is mounted on the end of a lever 100 pivotally connected to a flexible extension 101 of the rack 81 and to a spring-controlled lever 103 operated by a magnet 104.
