Abstract
Bicycle part treated with nano-particle deposition compound for aerodynamic drag reduction. The bicycle part is preferably moulded from fibre reinforced material.
Description
BICYCLE PARTS
The present invention relates to bicycle parts.
All bicycle parts exposed in use to air flow past them contribute to the drag which a rider must overcome in propelling the bicycle.
Generally parts can have their drag reduced by both making them of a more aerodynamic shape, that is by reducing their frontal area and allowing air flow to redevelop pressure behind the parts. Also they can have their drag reduced by improving their surface finish -in effect making them more slippery to air flow past the.
I have surprisingly found that treating parts with nano-particle deposition material perceptibly reduces their drag. I have been particularly surprised that this effect is obtained in treating fibre reinforced material parts, bearing in mind that such parts are made in a mould generally imparting a high gloss to the outer, gel-coat of the part.
The object of the present invention is to provide to reduce aerodynamic drag of bicycle parts.
According to the invention there is provided a bicycle part treated with nano-particle deposition compound for aerodynamic drag reduction.
Preferably the part is moulded from fibre reinforced material.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a bicycle seat post with a seat and bicycle frame shown in outline.
Referring to the drawing, the seat post 1 is moulded of carbon fibre resin reinforced material with a smooth outer, gel-coat surface 2.
Application of nano particle deposition compound to the surface 2 reduced the drag caused by the seat post under test in a wind tunnel at competition speeds by 5%.
The compound used was NanoConcept NTV 100 Topcoat, from Hofman and Bucher GbR in Germany. We achieve similar results from NanoConcept Kunststoff Versiegelung from the same company.

- CLAIM& 1. A bicycle part treated with nano-particle deposition compound for aerodynamic drag reduction.
- 2. A bicycle pan as claimed in claim 1, wherein the part is moulded from fibre reinforced material.
