Abstract
A watch has a casing and no external mechanisms such as push buttons crowns. Setting and adjustment of the watch movement itself is facilitated with the use of modulated electromagnetic radiation through the watch glass. Preferably an appropriate atmosphere within the watch case is maintained to increase the reliability and integrity of the watch movement. The casing is preferably hermetically sealed.
Description
A Crowniess Watch Case.
Watch cases have included a mechanical means of setting and adjusting the watch as part of its normal use. This has been facilitated by the provision of a crown external to the watch case which is mechanically linked to the watch movement (internal to the case). The provision of a crown in this manner means that the volume within the watch case itself is not hermetically sealed. This method conveys a number of risks which affect the assurance of the seal of the internal volume of the watch case. These risks include water I moisture ingress and egress of the atmosphere held within the watch case itself.
The present invention seeks to obviate the need for an external mechanical setting mechanism.
A first aspect of the invention provides a method of furnishing a watch case with no external holes or apertures apart from the aperture within which the watch glass is held. The watch movement is held mechanically within the case and is retained in place by the application of the watch glass.
A second aspect of the invention is provision of a means by which the watch movement can be remotely set and adjusted. This is facilitated through the watch glass by means of modulated radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum.
A third aspect of the invention is the provision of an appropriate atmosphere within the watch case itself to increase the integrity and reliability of the movement. This is only now viable as the volume within the watch case itself is hermetically sealed and can therefore persist for a considerable time.
The appropriate atmosphere can be a vacuum of appropriate pressure or a gaseous element or mixture at appropriate pressure. Provision of such a persistent atmosphere at the point of manufacture or service will alter the failure modes of the components of the watch movement itself In the ease of an electronic movement, the characteristics of gaseous diffusion within the component cases (for the avoidance of doubt, cases in this instance means the potted component cases of integrated circuits and electronic components) will be altered increasing the lifetime of the components.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of non limiting example only, with reference to drawings in which Figures 1 to 3 show an example of a watch case.
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the front of the watch case. Of note is the absence of any breech of integrity of the inner volume of the watch ease other than by the front aperture which will hold the watch glass in a secure manner. There is no crown. An example of the retention mechanism for the watch glass is the use of a screw in watch glass retained with waterproof seals, or a watch glass which is retained with adhesive. Figure 2 shows a side view of the watch case showing in principle how a watch glass would fit to the front of the case. Figure 3 shows a schema by which the watch may he programmed with the use of a personal computer and suitable transducer(s). The personal computer, running a bespoke programming utility for the watch communicates with the watch with the aide of suitable protocols and transducers. With the aide of the same, the personal computer is able to programme time, date and other parameters into the watch. The watch is then able to provide the appropriate display, based on the programmed parameters. There are a number of options within the programming schema which an individual skilled in the art will be able to adapt in order to achieve the requisite functionality without altering the essence of the invention.
The power needed to operate the watch movement and the watch glass retention arrangement is beyond the scope of this invention.
