Description
DRAINAGE BAG CONNECTOR
This invention relates to the connection of a fluid collection bag to a drainage bag for example, but not exclusively a urine collection bag and drainage bag.
It is well known in medical care facilities for some patients to wear portable collection bags to collect fluid such as urine from a patient who is not able otherwise to hygienically dispose of the fluid directly. These bags can be emptied or changed frequently during day time hours but it is often desirable not to disturb patients' sleep to change or empty bags overnight. For this reason, lamer less portable bags (drainage bags) have been developed and while a patient is immobile, for example when asleep, the drainage bag is connected to an outlet of the collection bag to ensure the collection bag Is not over filled.
Typically, the outlet of a collection bag is in the form of a flexible tube with a slightly oval cross section. The tube can be deformed by application of finger pressure into a circular cross section to receive a connector of circular cross section. SInce the tube is biased to return to the oval cross section, it exerts a radial force onto the connector assisting in gripping the tube in place.
Presently, connectors comprise hard plastic tubes, typically with a tapered and grooved end which is received part way into the flexible outlet tube. Such connectors work well when there Is lithe motion between the collection and drainage bag, however, problems arise when a patient moves whilst wearing the connected collection bag. Movement can cause the flexible outlet tube to twist or fold potentially causing blockage of the outlet or can result in sufficient deformation of the tube to allow the connecter to be forced out These problems in turn can result In leaking of the collection bag.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved connector which overcomes the
problems identified with the prior art.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a connector for connecting between an outlet of a collection bag and an inlet of a drainage bag comprising a rigid tube configured at a first end to fit securely into an Inlet conduit of the drainage bag, a conically tapered mid section configured to be received in an outlet conduit of a collection bag and a reduced diameter portion extending axially from the mid section and including multiple perforations in Its walls.
In use, the reduced diameter portion is inserted through the outlet of the collection bag and the tapered mid section is forced Into the outlet opening in much the same manner is known
in the prior art.
Desirably, in addition, the extended portion Is provided with a skirt portion axially spaced from the tapered mid section. This skirt portion can assist In retention of the connector in the outlet.
The skirt portion may be tapered, preferably in the same direction as the mid section is tapered. Optionally, the skirt comprises a resilient material enabling to be deformed but return to an original shape when load Is not applied.
The perforations are conveniently arranged In multiple columns extending the length of the reduced diameter portion. In an alternative they may be randomly spaced In the wall of the reduced diameter portion.
The length of the reduced diameter portion is preferably selected such that the reduced diameter portion, in use, extends through the outlet tube of the collection bag and into the main body of the collection bag. This assists in the prevention of twisting or deformation of the outlet tube which might otherwise result in a blockage In the bag.
The tapered mid section desIrably has a ridged or roughened surface to resist separation of the outlet and connector when in situ.
The connector desirably comprises a unitary piece of rigid plastic. For example, the unitary piece may be moulded.
In another aspect, the reduced diameter portion is provided as a retrofittable device for attachment to a standard connector. The retrofittable device is attachable to the connector end which connects with the collection bag outlet and comprises a rigid tube configured to extend axially from the connector end and including multiple perforations In Its walls.
The retrofittable device may be configured to attach to the connector by any of a variety of means. In a simplest form, the tube is proportioned to securely push fit into the connector.
In alternative arrangements, connection might be achieved by means of a clip, a screw fit or other mechanical connector, or adhesive.
By way of example, an embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying Figures in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of one embodiment of a connector in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows the connector of Figure 1 in cross section through the line B-B as shown on Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a three dimensional wire frame view of the connector of Figure 1 and Figure 2.
As can be seen in Figure 1, a connector comprises a first end portion (1) configured for fitting into an inlet conduit (not shown) of a drainage bag (not shown). The first end portion includes a tapered, stepped end (2) adjacent a narrowed diameter section (3). In use the stepped end (2) is forced into a deformable conduit of slightly smaller diameter which grips the connector in the region of the narrowed diameter section (3). Adjacent the narrowed diameter section (3) is a mid section (4). The rigid section (4) includes a cylindrical section (5) and a conically tapered section (6). The conically tapered section (6) is provided with a series of circumferential ribs (6a) which assist in gripping the inner wall of an outlet (not shown) of a collection bag (not shown).
An elongate, reduced diameter cylindrical portion (7) extends from the conically tapered section (6). Multiple perforations (7a) pass through the wall of this reduced diameter portion (7). A skirt (8) is provided about mid way along the length of the reduced diameter portion (7). The skirt tapers in the same direction as the conically tapered section (6).
It can be seen the connector comprises a sing'e unftary piece wfth the exception of the skirt.
The skirt coud, of course, aso be provided as part of the unitary structure. Afternativdy the connector coud comprise muftipe components secured together.
The connector is comprised of a rigid and inert pastic materiaL The connector may optionaHy includes a tap for releasing samples of the fluid being drained from the coflection bag or inserting implements to test properties of the fluid. -5-.
