Abstract

A safety system allowing only registered and authorised personnel to operate radio controlled equipment, such as overhead cranes, by means of a log in token reader or biometric reader to activate a remote control system via a login station. This safety is achieved by an authorised user presenting an RFID token, a magnetic token or a finger to the reader built into the login station. The user s details are compared to the data stored in software or within the device itself, checking if access is permitted. If access is permitted an infrared transmitter is then activated which transmits an encoded message for a finite time (variable parameter). The user can now introduce a matched and paired radio control transmitter within the infra red zone generated by the encoder. The radio control transmitter receives the encoded message and allows the system to be reset. If the transmitter is not paired, the encoder has timed out or the userâ s rights or privileges do not match the data stored then the radio transmitter will not be allowed to reset the radio receiver on the equipment to be operated.

Description

I
Crane Remote Control Secure Logjn system This invention relates to a system to improve the safety of remote control devices.
Conventional means of control such as pendant stations and radio controls allow electrical devices such as overhead travelling cranes to be accessed and controlled by anyone (untrained or unautborised) within the location of the device which could lead to the following situations: I. Damage to the device H. Damage to the load being lifted Ill. Personal injury IV. Injury to others within the proximity of the device V. Damage to equipment in close proximity to the device VI. Damage to the remote control transmitter or pendant To overcome these problems the present invention proposes a safety system utilising token log-in and biometric technology, infra red light emission and networked software integration By combining the infra-red device with a secure personnel log-in system; either via RFID/magnet token or biometric reader, it can ensure that only the registered user may power the infra-red sensor and then in turn start the radio control transmitter.
The outline of operation is as follow: A qualified and authorised user will be entered onto the system software and granted specific rights (equipment, shift pattern, location etc) unique to them. They will be issued with a unique token andlor their biometric data being saved.
With the aid of the login station display information the user locates the assigned piece of equipment and the remote control to he used then presents their form of identification at the login station. At this point the display will notify the user of their current access rights, If access is denied a red warning message is displayed advising them so. If access is granted a green confirmation message is displayed (for a system specified time period i.e. seconds) advising the user they can now activate the system.
Whilst the green confirmation message is displayed the control unit activates the infrared zone allowing the paired transmitter to be activated.
The Infrared zone consists of a coded infrared signal that only the paired transmitter is able to detect, the transmitter is only allowed to start whilst in receipt of this code and inside the zone, If the user does not activate the transmitter within the given time the system will revert back to its safe standby mode deactivating the infrared coded zone and thus preventing start up. Alternatively if the radio control receives a stop signal or times out due to inactivity the user will need to login again to reactivate the system this ensures that if the transmitter is left unattended it will automatically revert to a safe state.
Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the system utilising the token entry method Figure 2 shows a block diagram of the system utilising the token entry and biometric method In figure 1 which references to our system (A) the control unit is a panel that incorporates an internal power supply, mica red emitter control unit, the RF1D token control unit and ethernet adaptor and connector. All internal and external connection points are located within the control unit.
The control unit is connected by cabling to the display and reader module, this unit contains the token reader/display and infrared emitter. The display gives device and user information regarding the user's status example default message "device login point", green message "radio control start" or the red message "access denied" In figure 2 which references our system (B), the control unit is configured as in system (A) hut with the addition of the biometric controller the system works in the same manner as in system (A) with the option of login methods. In the ease of the biometric reader the user presents a finger to it thus initialising the system as described above.
Both systems details above allow only authorised user to gain control of the equipment. The associated software allows full control of individual user information and give detailed reports on their activity Claim
