Abstract

248,441. Imray, O. Y., (Blanchard Machine Co.). Dec. 1, 1924. Magnetic work-holders; processes, special.-In a grinding machine in which the work 92 is supported on a magnetic work-holder, the magnets and the work holder are so arranged that the ink is held magnetically during its passage beneath the grinding-tool 8 and is released, for removal and replacement, upon issuing from beneath the grinding-tool. The work-holder is rotatably mounted on an annular support 18 and comprises a gear 20 carrying a ring 22 of non-magnetic material to which is secured a body 24 of magnetic material, and within the body are mounted, upon the support 18, stationary magnets 38, which occupy approximately one half of the circumference of the chuck. The face of the body has radial grooves 50 and annular grooves 52 filled with non-magnetic material and the body has therein slots 56, 58 to assist in localization of the magnetic zone; non-magnetic rings 60, 62 serve to strengthen the body. In order to assist in releasing the work as this passes into the non-magnetic zone, a magnet 78 is provided, wound to produce a polarity opposite to that of the other magnets; the field of the magnet is controlled by a resistance and a rheostat, and the magnet is adjustable around the axis of the work-holder.
