Abstract
248,008. Meissner, F. Feb. 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Sprinklers, automatic; sprinkling apparatus, non-automatic.-The water valve of an automatic sprinkler is opened by the expansion of air in a bulb on a ceiling acting through a relay valve. The upward pressure on the valve 15 closing the water main 4, Fig. 2, is equalized by a weight 20 and by water pressure in the chamber 14 above the valve, transmitted by a nozzle 11 and pipe 19. The chamber 14 communicates, by a passage 13. Fig. 3, with the open end of a glass tube 8 in a chamber 9 below a valve 6. When the air in a bulb 1, Fig. 1<a>, expands on heating, it transmits pressure by a tube 2 to a diaphragm 3 and lowers the valve 6 against an adjustable spring 7, the valve 6 breaking the tube 8. Water can now flow from the chamber 14 to the chamber 9 by way of the tube 8, thus reducing the pressure on the upper side of the valve 15 so that the latter lifts and water flows freely by an annular chamber 16 to the sprinkler pipe 17. The sprinkler may be operated manually by a valve 24 which, when opened, allows water to flow from the chamber 14 by way of a pipe 23. The valve 24 is protected from contact with water by a seal 25 which it breaks on opening. The pipe 23 may be provided with safety fuses 27, Fig. 1<a>, which melt in the event of fire and allow water to flow from the chamber 14. A manually operated cock 33 may be provided in the sprinkler pipe 17 for testing purposes. The handle 34 of this cock is so arranged that the cock must be turned to service position before the door of the apparatus casing can be closed.
